full size m&p 9 magazine seating issue.
Hi all, picked a brand new 2014 manufacture m&p 9 today. Im having an issue with mag seating. Not with full mags I know they need to break in. My issue is with the mags even when they are empty and the slide is locked back I have to smack them in. If i push them in I can see the reverse side of the mag catch move up a little and if I push gently down on it the catch snaps into the mag or if I put the mag in with a little force not much but enough that if I don't the mag will fall out. Is the mag catch maybe to small? Or is this just a common thing with m&p that will wear in? This is my first experience with m&p.

Look inside the magwell and make sure there's no extra pieces of plastic that didn't get completely trimmed in manufacturing. I've never had the problem you describe in the 3 that I have. Most of my reloads are during a match so I tend to insert them with a bit of force , but even at the start of the string I don't have to slam them in, I just slide them in and push upward until I feel them "click". You might try "dry" reloads at home a few hundred times and see if it gets better (after you inspect for excess plastic). HTH

I did a lot of dry reloads and no effect . I checked for plastic there is none. I'll get a new magazine release and try that if that's not it then I'm sending it to smith.

Tropic... If it were mine I would want it tight when new. I would "slap" the mags home for now. If say after 250 rnds or so and they still won't seat gently, give S&W a call. (alternate mags during this process...)

I did put 150rnds and 200 dry reloads in it and it didn't help at all. But the mag release is weird it pushes up when I start sliding the mag in. And I think the metal piece is crooked or has a bur that is catching the mag and causing it hence the reason I'm going to swap it. I want that costa catalyst mag release any ways

Are you by chance left handed and have the mag release on the right side? The reason I ask is that I've heard of problems when the mag release is on the right side.

This was due to a magazine design issue that has been addressed. A relatively new gun shouldn't experience that.
tropicheat,
Got any pics of this? Of the mag catch?

I'm not a lefty. I'll try and get some pics tomorrow. I think either the metal piece is too big or the slider is too small, the button and opposite end have alot of wiggle.

Hmmm, sounds like the mag catch is too small. That would be weird because I thought they were all the same. First I've heard of this issue.

That's what I'm thinking as well. I can see when it's stuck up that the hole in the mag is in the proper position but the tab on the mag release is up about 1/32 of an inch to high to fall in. The metal tab may be just that much to thick. I've contacted smith and waiting for there reply.

** update **
Finally received a new magazine catch from smith. I looked at the new one and the old one they look identical to me but the new one solved the issue! Something with the older one must have been just a hair out of spec. Now the mags click right in like they are supposed too unless they are fully loaded then they require a little force which is to be expected though.
