Standard or High Velocity in M&P 22 LR?

Do you use Standard or High Velocity in your M&P 22 compact?

I'm wondering about using Standard or High Velocity in my new M&P 22 LR. My initial thoughts are to use standard velocity with the thought that such "non plus P" ammo would be easier on the pistol in the long run. I plan on shooting this pistol and lot, and I don't want to abuse it by using higher velocity ammo. I see nothing in the manual that suggest NOT using High Velocity, and let's face it, we're lucky to find ANY velocity lately!

High velocity ammo (below 1300 fps) are perfectly fine to use with any modern 22LR gun. Shoot all you want.

It's the hyper velocity ammo (1400+ fps) that you might want to limit.

Yeah, I've never used, nor do I plan to use the Hypervelocity fodder. I think that's mainly used just for hunting, and I don't do that that. Don't need all that speed for punching paper or steel!

The view reviews on to be found have shoot some of all velocity levels . Seems like you can shoot what ever you order or have access too. I would not waist money on hyper velocity ammo.

I hunt with plain ole 1080fps ammo.

Some people experience function issues in M&P 22s with lower speed "target" ammunition, particularly if they also shoot loose grip. I use the M&P 22 for trainers and get to see a lot of people shoot for the first time, and use the "High velocity" 40gr routinely for reliability with variable grips. One young lady wanted to use some "Olympic" ammo that unfortunately would not cycle the gun.

Seems like a good to teach the fundamentals better grip than to bump ammo velocity.

MP .22 Ammo

Well I am starting to really dislike the mp22. Fussiest *** about ammo I ever saw. Only eats FMJ or refuses to eject the casing. Even the copper coated variety is iffy with this gun.
I'm thinking it's going to find a new home. Was cheap enough but just not worth the hassle to find and feed it the right diet.
Been through 4 different types and brands in a week. And with the .22 shortage can't get what it prefers to eat.

Interesting. Thanks. This was the regular M&P22, the Walther version, right? I've head the Compact version is more tolerant.

Never seen FMJ 22lr ammo before.....thought you meant the copper-washed stuff until I read your entire post. Is your finicky one a standard 12 rounds pistol or the compact 10 round one?

My MP 22 works with every 22 ammo I have tried except federal. All the ammo I have used in the gun is High Velocity.

Mine seems to like anything I feed it. I save my standard velocity stuff for my M41 and my High Standards.

Mine seems to feed just about anything. Occasionally it will fail to feed on the second round from the mag. After the first shot. Cycle the slide and you are off and running again.

Your post brings up an interesting question regarding the quality control of rim fire pistols at S&W. I have a Smith & Wesson MP .22 ( the standard Walther version) that shoots anything I load in the magazine and I have used a dozen different manufacturers and velocities from 1050 to 1300 fps. My M&P has been completely problem free and will shoot any ammo I load it with.

On the other hand, I have a Smith & Wesson 22-A1 target pistol that so far will only ingest CCI mini-Mag ammo and will fail to load, stovepipe, or FTE anything else I put in it.

I actually bought another one just to see, and like my M&P it shoots anything I put in it and so far that is about 6 different manufacturers so it has to be the gun.

One thing you might try, is to spray the mag with some dry lube and see if that helps.

I also have the M&P 22 that will eat everything I feed it. My Mossberg rifle however is another story. :(
