Has anyone been able to remove the thread protector from the M&P Compact .22?

Standard thread, at least mine was. Came right off but I have heard mine was unusual a lot of people have been having problems with it.

Finally got mine off (same wrench, btw). Thought I was going to add a new twist to the barrel in the process.

Someone had suggested putting it in the freezer. Tried that. Soaked some oil into the thread overnight (suspect that helped, but can't say for sure). Finally just brute force won, but I was at the point of getting ready to take it to the gunsmith.

With the gun pointed away in front of me, clockwise loosens, counter-clockwise tightens.

I got mine off - it shouldn't be a big deal.

You have to get it off if you wanna do this with it:

Like a BOSS...

Get some WD-40 in between the muzzle and the thread protector. And let it soak overnight. It still takes some muscle to dislodge, but should work.

Simple fix. Put a few mags of ammo through it, and while the barrel is still warm, give it the wrench, should come right off.

I had to let mine soak over night with WD-40 and had to heat it up a bit. Still took bit of elbow grease, but finally let loose.

Now mine looks just like dullh's!!! :) :) :) (great host BTW)

It always struck me as odd, that S&W didn't include the wrench in the box. My Colt 1911-22 did come with a wrench and was WAY easier to break loose. I haven't tried to take mine off yet but, my boss and a couple of my fellow emloyee's who have the same model have, and theirs were all a royal PITA.

I stuck my gun in a vise, put the wrench (same one you got) on it, and then stuck the wrench in my AR tool and leveraged that bit off.

Mine was tough. Not sure I'd recommend my solution - ruined my adaptor. Strip the slide off, put the adaptor in a vise, use a big wrench on the chamber area and screw the gun off the adaptor. The vise then squeezes the adaptor but oh well. Fun gun with suppressor!

What always struck me as odd was that S&W torques the barrel cap on tighter then the lug nuts on a truck. Mine broke free with a loud "SNAP" that made me think I broke something. I'm not sure what they're thinking here.

I just received my M&P 22 compact suppressor-ready model.
The instructions say remove the thread adaptor prior to field stripping and the gun came with a tool included.
It also says to rotate the adapter counter clockwise.
NOW - - - - I tried as hard as I could and it wouldn't move. I went as hard as I thought but did not want to damage the gun.
NO Luck.
Called customer service and they said try harder.,
I BROKe the jaw of the tool and the adapter is still on.
Called CS again and they said they would send me a new wrench!:(:(

Get WD-40 in there and let it soak overnight. Using a cheater bar over the wrench handle would help with leverage also.

Great. Sounds like the same gorilla who was putting the barrel thread caps on has the job of putting the suppressor adapters on, too.

Mine arrives tomorrow, so we'll see how bad it's torqued.

Eric (EWK) made a wrench that will hold up long after the barrel adds a new twist :)
Since I put the standard end cap back on when shooting with folks just new to me, I use it often.

OK - - - The new wrench hasn't arrived as yet but the question still remains when removing the adapter the instructions say turn counter clockwise - - - but it doesn't specify which end your looking at .
Before I broke the wrench, I called CS and they told me that your looking at the adapter from the back of the gun or the chamber end. That is what I tried and applied enough pressure that the jaw on the wrench broke so I am asking here. Can someone that has gotten that adapter off tell me for sure, turn it counterclockwise but from witch end.
I know its lefty loosen but it all depends on whether you are looking at the gun from the muzzle end or the chamber end.

Looking from chamber end, CW to loosen.
Looking from muzzle end, it's CCW to loosen.

Shot my compact today for the first time. Couldn't budge the thread protector at first but when the barrel heated up after a couple dozen rounds, off she came with a little muscle. Couldn't strip the gun until it came off. Nice gun, no problems with 75-80 rounds. Had to change elevation a little, seems accurate enough for a short barrel.
