full size 9mm question
hi guys,
nearly 50 year old here who has owned many rifles and shotguns over the years, in fact I have a M&P 15-22 and a M&P 15 MOE...have fired friends handguns over the years but by no means a handgun expert...have spent several months kicking around different handguns and had just about settled on the full size 9mm with a thumb safety when I began to notice the threads about problems with the mags...just wondering, and can't think of a better bunch of people to ask than you fine folks here, is it a problem widespread and substantial enuf that I should reconsider and re-open my search for a high capacity 9...???...
thanks in advance,
shep

What problem?
I have a 5" barrel 9mm Pro, without a thumb safety if that makes any difference, and I've never had any problem with my magazines. The two that came with the gun have feed ammo flawlessly. And this is one of my most favorite and accurate guns.

many people with fs 9mm's have experienced a problem with the mags where the follower will jam on the mag catch window...according to a two page thread in this forum, the answer is to take a dremel and grind down the offending corner of the follower...not a big deal, but it seems like it should/would have been addressed by S&W by now and I am just checking to see if it has, I don't think I should have to break out a dremel and attack a brand new fire arm to stop jamming issues...
here is a link to the thread that has the suggested fix: New m&p 9 full ftf with magazine release for lefty

thanks man, that's good to hear about your 9, ironic though, I have a 15-22 that eats anything and everything...I have never had an issue with it...

If You Find A Taurus M92 Get It.
Look for a Taurus M92/M99 and try it in your hand. It is a hi-cap 9mm and I think that you will like it. Me personally, I never had a problem with either model.

OP, i noticed that thread you mentioned was started over 3 yrs ago. I haven't seen anything near recent on this site that would have led me to any concerns about the FS 9 while i was doing my research. I can say I've over 1500 rounds thru my 9c in the past year+ (most using a full size mag) and 400 rnds thru my FS9 purchased a couple months ago. Not one issue and that's using various 115 target ammo and a couple types of SD ammo as well.
Perhaps if there was a legit issue it has been resolved; but based on what I've found this doesn't seem to be something of concern now. At least it wasn't for me anyway......

Like others have asked "what mag problems?"
My experience may differ due to the 10 round limits we have here in CA, but I have nearly a dozen fs mags for mine and even run them in my compact without issue.
Are you left handed?

Have owned my FS M&P 9mm since Dec. 2014 (Mfg. Date Nov. 2013). Besides the 2 mags that came with it, I bought 2 add'l. and I have not had ANY issues with any of them. It's a joy to take to the range and eats anything I put through it-factory or reloads. AND it's Made in the USA and has a Lifetime Warranty-what's not to like? Go ahead, buy it! :-)

The M&P 9 has had at least 3 different follower designs in the past few years, I have all 3 varieties in my 20 competition magazines. I've not had a problem with any of them (I do clean them monthly, more if I drop them in the mud). But then again, I'm not a Lefty, but I've heard of problems with switching the release to the other side.

I'm not left handed but changed the mag release to lefty; with my arthritic right hand, its easier for me to use my trigger finger to release the mag than it is to try to get my thumb to do it. Still no mag problems.

As a lefty, I experienced the problem with my 9FS a few years ago after changing the mag catch over to the "left hand" side. I found that in my case the cause appeared to be the catch itself.
The catch is made with a metal insert that retains the magazine. Some of these inserts stuck out farther than others. I purchased a replacement mag catch from SSSS with the intention of grinding the insert a bit to eliminate the problem.
Upon receipt of the replacement catch I found it did not extend into the magazine tube nearly as far as the original. Once installed I never had any further problems.

Never a problem with any of my mags dropping free. I have a FS9 and a Pro9 with original mags and also mags purchased at various times over the past 3 years. I shoot a lot of IDPA. Never an issue.
I'm also a lefty. But I did not swap the mag catch.

Are you stuck on buying a striker fired and/or S&W pistol? If not, you might want to look at a Sig 226 or 229. They're very different from the S&W's, but are a great pistols in their own right. Good luck.
