Default Milling for a RMR for class

I'm taking a gunsmithing class at local community college and toward the end of the year need to project to do one my own. Looking to get a newest Gen MP (I have first gen that only like heavy pills because of the funky twist).

I've got the drawing form Trijicon already, however I'm still needing a little help.

1) I would like cowitness sights. keep front and rear sights, RMR in between the two.

2) The milling to the slide depth wise will be as far as I can tell to the bottom of the dove tail. As you can see here (the bttom of the dovetail sights are parallel with bottom of the RMR.

3) Need to know Dovetail bit size that I will need. I believe it's .300 at 65 degrees.

Default Simple answer

Reach out to David Bowie at Bowie Tactical Concepts Home Page. By far he does the best work and SHOULD be able and willing to help you out. Good luck. Based on personal experience, gunsmiths that have never installed one, even good gunsmiths, often mess up on installing RMRs. Great care needs to be taken to get the angle of the cut correct. Just sayin.

Hey Keith, I've reach out to David 2 days ago. I know hes busy man so just waiting. The drawing from Trijicon helps a lot, but my instructor is going to be there in case I make the wrong move.

I am pretty sure you will need suppressor height sights to go absolute co-witness. I have not followed that part of the string on another forum on which RDS on pistols is being discussed (46 pages now).

Just a note:

The Trijicon requires two studs at the front. S&W handles that by using an adapter plate. It is easier to mill the studs into the adapter plate and then install the plate with the RMR on top. However, the RMR will sit lower in the slide if the studs are simply milled into the slide itself. This is infinitely more challenging, but worth the effort if done correctly.

You can see what I mean on David Bowie's page.

Yes sir, those post act as locking lugs and to locate the RMR on the slide to prevent the screws fro shearing off due to G_Shock load. I'll have to write a small CNC program. Trijicon print shows this n their print. The adapter plate, are you referring to the thin metal shim that the RMR sits on. When you mention the adapter plate I'm thinking of the plate that comes with the MP CORE pistols.

Yes indeed, that is what I'm talking about. The C.O.R.E. comes with several of them for different optics.

This is the one David Bowie did for me. I prefer David's front sight dot and rear reference line set up better than having the RMR any closer to the ejection port.

I vote for suppressor height sights front and behind the RMR. My RMR mounted in front of my rear sight has never been struck by ejecting brass-- ~1500 rounds. Non issue.

True cowitness and true backup. Much easier and quicker to learn to shoot. Much more capable if you ever lose the dot.

Suggestion: mill some properly dimensioned bar stock as tests for your skills and program. Don't do the expensive slide until you are sure you can do it right. Good luck, er, skill!

Keith, can you tell me the height of your front sight on the gun Bowie did the RMR work on.

Thanks in advance,
Bruce
