M & P 45 Police trade in
I got a call from my LGS. He asked if I was interested in a police trade in.
I was heading that way, so I stopped in. This was one of 25 a local PD traded in for another brand in 9mm. Seems some of the officers can't handle the .45. No comment! This one and another one were spares and were not carried or fired, I really wasn't interested, until he told me the price. $375.00 otd. I bought it. He owed me a favor from a collection of guns I sent his way.

I'm new to this type of forum, but it does seem very interesting to read the thoughtful views S&W members have. About the M&P45 trade-ins, are any of those weapons still available at the price mentioned? I just got an SD9VE and am very happy with it. I carried a 1911 .45cal pistol as an SF Medic for 8 years, and would like to get an M&P45 at a reasonable price. If those are all sold, does anyone know of a site where other M&P45's are available?

You can find M&P45 police trade-ins all the time from Bud's ~$400.
3 mags, night sights
With the holster though, that deal is pretty good, and being able to see the condition in person first is invaluable.

I don't have any 45's but at that price I would not pass it up. I see you are also from MA, how many rounds fit in those mags?

This is my first .45 also. I had a 645 a long time ago. I was and still am a wheelgun man. I couldn't pass it up either. All three are 10 round mags.

Is that what they actually said? "Seems some of the officers can't handle the 45"

They are old but not expired. They still function just like the new ones only made a while ago. Police guns have more external wear than internal

I know. I was shocked when I heard that. I carried a Model 29 during my LEO career.

I say that $375 is a very good price.
The current LE trend seems to be leaning back toward 9mm. While shooting skills and ability to control the pistol play a part of the decisions, I think the main issue is logistics: 9mm, even the defensive loads are cheaper than 45. I switched back myself last year primarily because the larger calibers started to stir up my arthritis. At the last open shooting event I attended, I noted the majority of non LE shooters also had 9s.

My sheriff's office carried the 4506 when I retired. Female deputies had difficulty with it back then. The sheriff's office pistol now is a .40 Glock. They have a lot more female deputies now, then when I was working. That is a genuine concern, and is most likely why they changed. I feel more comfortable with a .45 than any other caliber. I carry a CS 45.

About one year ago, we had a Mass State Police officer following a stolen car. Car turned down a dead end street. LEO exited his prowl car. Car turned around and came straight at him. One shot from his newly issued S & W M&P .45 through the bad guy's windshield stopped the perp dead. Female passenger fled the scene. I don't think a 9mm would have done the job as clean.

Nice find, I have a M&P 45 in the 4in barrel and it is very easy to handle not much recoil its definitely softer shooting than my 40 compacts, I think anyway!

25 years on the road as a State Trooper. Believe me, whoever chooses the sidearm for the department doesn't ask for input from the men or women who will actually carry them. The worst people on the range are usually the desk sergeants, detectives, and command personnel. Having said that, not every officer is a great shooter.

How true! Back in the day, we have a police matron that carried a model 36 3". Whenever we had range time she would come up and shoot with us. Talk about improper stance! She would be bent over backwards so bad the chief would stand behind he. We tried to correct her. BIG MISTAKE!!!!! Boy did we catch heck.
She tried to convince the chief we should all carry Model 36's.
I told him I did, but off duty.
