Are the external dimensions of the M&P 9 and M&P 40 (full size) frames the same (i.e. trigger reach, grip circumference, height) or is the 9mm version slightly smaller?

Frames are exactly the same. Only the slides and barrels differ, but their external dimensions are the same

Thanks much, Wife likes my M&P 40 and wanted a M&P 9mm but wanted a slightly smaller grip and still stay with the full size barrel. She is just S.O.L.

Steve...........

Have her take a look at the M&P Shield 9mm if she hasn't already. Very similar platform but it's a little smaller overall and with a single stack magazine the grip is narrower.

Has she tried the pistol with the different backstraps that come with the gun?

I've got average hands and prefer the small backstrap on my 9C and my wife who has small hands prefers the medium on her 9c. Funny thing is that our preferences are exactly opposite on the full size. The only way for her to know her preference is to try them on the range.

Definitely - the different backstraps make a big difference in how the gun feels in the hand.

The 9c/40c frames are the same size as the 9/40 full-size frames, except in the grip length and the length of the rail at the front. You can actually use a full-size slide on a compact frame, although the recoil spring won't be fully covered.
