Thumbs up Got a used M&P .45 from Buds. I'm satisfied

Picked up my "Superbuy" M&P .45 today from my local dealer. In the box was the gun, three mags, two grip panels and a manual. As received the mag release was flipped to the right side and the large grip was installed. This gun does not have a manual safety or a mag safety.

So I cleaned it up, put the mag release back on the left and installed the small grip. It seemed somebody had at least brushed off the big chunks. It was not as dirty as I expected but the bore needed a bit of scrubbing.

Here are my observations. It does not seem to have been fired a lot. I suspect not more than a few hundred rounds. Very little internal wear. It has been carried. There are a couple of shiny spots on the trigger guard and one on the top of the slide from a holster.

Night sights look like they have a fair amount of life left and are usable.

Trigger is typical for an M&P, usable but could be better.

Mags are beat up and don't match the condition of the gun. Looks like they were range mags. Floor plates are pretty beat up. I have other mags so not a major deal. I'll probably change the springs and followers and use these for range/plinking mags.

Now here is the odd thing. With one mag in particular in the gun, the sear won't reset a fair amount of time while dry firing and cycling the slide. No problems with any of the other mags or no mag in the gun. Weird. I don't see any obvious reason for this but will mark the problem mag and troubleshoot it later.

Overall I'm satisfied. The gun cleaned up nice and the mags can probably be rehabilitated. This gun has an MPY serial number prefix. Anybody know when it may have been manufactured?

Thanks

Nice write up.

Can you post a pic of the right side of the offending magazine? The front too?

Maybe all sides of that mag if you get a chance.

I'm trying to figure out how a mag could cause that problem. It could help others in the future.

Here is the offending mag with the X. With casual inspection I can not see any reason for it. Just this mag. The others work fine. I'm curious if there will be any issues with this mag while actually shooting live ammo. It will be later in the week before I get a chance to try it.

Nice review. My mag release is for a lefty so I have to figure out how to move it from the left side to the right side. Not sure if I can do it myself.

Mr45, it's pretty easy. Maybe this will help.
- Take the slide off the frame
- Look down the magazine well. You will see the back of the mag release with a straight wire spring sticking up and hooked by the release. All you have to do is unhook the spring, remove the mag release, put it back in on the opposite side of the grip then hook the spring.
I use something that has a hole in it and put it over the top of the spring to move it around. A ball point pen with the point retracted works fine.

Good Luck.

Looks like a nice one! I like my FS M&P 45-was bought at the LGS and I paid a premium for mine ANIB (2007 model). No complaints here. Fires/Functions and accuracy on par with my Ruger SR1911 FS. What's not to like?

Enjoy :-)

M&P has hands down the simplest mag release switching procedure of all the guns I've worked on.

I should have never read this thread! Checked Bud's website. It does look like a SUPERBUY. It is very tempting. Problem is, my wife might use it against me I have two 10/22's on layaway. Those are enough to get me in trouble. Is there a cure for this habit? Or like a Guns Anonymous association?

Looks like I'll get a chance to shoot this tomorrow. I have to run a qualification shoot for a couple guys who have to get one in before the end of the year. Might as well take the opportunity to put some rounds through it. I hate it when guys wait until the last minute.....

Rastoff, I took a closer look at this mag tonight. I noticed the follower had some pretty significant drag marks. For grins, I swapped followers with a good mag and what do ya know, the problem is with the follower. Nice to know. I'll get a new follower on order when I can find one.

I put a few mags of ammo through this gun. It does not seem to like feeding my reloaded SWCs but otherwise runs RN ammo fine. All the magazines functioned as they were supposed to. Sun is shining today soI think I'll shoot it some more.

Not sure the age of your gun but it says "stainless" on the slide and the rear sight doesn't have that ledge for one handed manipulations...maybe 2007-2010 ? If your mags look beat up, the gun was probably fired a lot..just sayin

Very little wear internally but who knows. The gun is running fine so not a big deal.

During training and qualification shoots our mags get dropped on the asphalt during reloads. It doesn't take long for the base plates to get pretty dinged up. We keep a separate supply of range mags to take that abuse. That's what these look like. The mag bodies are in good shape. Got new base plates on order to make em look pretty again.

Did the paperwork on mine today and did a quick look over. The night sights are in good shape and there is holster wear on the slide and hood of the barrel. Now the trigger was nice compared to other M&P's I have shot. Not a big fan on the ambi safety and mine has the mag safety also. I know I will be getting rid of the mag safety but am still on the fence with the thumb safety. I have always taken off the ambi safeties on all my 1911's so don't kow if I will keep this one or not.

Huh! I wonder if all these are trade-ins from the same agency? Mine has no thumb safety or magazine safety. Seems like they would all be the same if from the same place.
