Texas DPS M&P model?
i have read for a while now that texas state troopers are switching from sigs to m&p handguns. just curious if anyone here knows which model they will use. i know its 9mm and 17 rounds, and 4.25" probably. i assume that they would not pick a model with thumb safety. i dont know about magazine safety or what trigger. thanks - mark

Well if they are going to 9mm, 4.25" with 17 round mags. I would say the standard FS 9mm. Like you, I have no idea about their thoughts on mag safeties, etc.

I have read several accounts in the past of the strong love the Texas DPS troopers had for the 357 Sig round. I wonder what happened to the love affair, budget constraints?

higher capacity magazines and lighter weight is all they have stated. im sure it has more to do with cost though. the guns must be way cheaper than the sigs and the ammo too.

The malfunctions were primarily double feeds and stove pipes. I don't know the exact number of malfunctions. there were 60 trainees in the initial week of firearms training. They qualified on Tuesday with the M&P. They were issued the sig 226 yesterday and qualified today with the sig. A talked with a guy this evening that is currently in the DPS academy. That's all I have to say about that.

They called out to us since we went to them and talked about the issues the Sheriff's had also.
We have not had any issues, running like tops.
Extraction DF and SP problems can be mags or weapons, can also be user, proper grip, that's a tough one.
Bet S&W is running wild.

Unfortunately we still use the M&P 45.....the entire agency is on at least a second one. One of my squad mates just swapped out #2 for his THIRD one.

I thought that the M&P 45 was one of the good ones? I have only heard good things about the 45 on the blog..

My guess is that the design is sound, and that this could be a QC problem. Again, this is pure speculation on my part. They may be trying to get too many out the door too quickly, and something has to give.
I have an M&P45 that has been great for me. I had an M&P9 that was lots of trouble with brass to the face. S&W ultimately refunded the purchase price to me, and I went with the glock 19. No brass to the face with the glock.

The design has been out long enough to prove that it is sound.
Unfortunately, if you QC is spotty, then even a sound design can result in a questionable pistol. An Agency purchasing a large quantity of guns, or even an individual buying his first pistol, shouldn't have to "roll the dice" and hope the gun is manufactured and assembled correctly.
I know that there is a finite number of guns per week that S&W can manufacture. Our LE sales rep told me the official number a couple of years ago. When filling our order last year (Our second issue of M&P9's) the factory had a hard time shipping enough guns on time to keep up with guns being issued per week.
I wonder if feeling presured to fill a larger order in time, that the QC is permitted to take second place to the almighty dollar of the sale?

I can confirm this. My buddy, a DPS Trooper shared with me this weekend. He's keeping his Sig.

Beat Trash may have hit the nail on the head-QC is taking second place to profit. In the long run, it kills a reputation. S&W is back to their game from the late 70s, early 80s.

S&W is still shipping them pistols and it appears everything has been cleared up.
So the contract is still a go.
