What is the difference between a regular M&P shield and one that is in Maryland compliance. Looking to purchase one and was told I must buy one that is Maryland compliance

Do you live in Maryland?
If yes, you must take delivery of a handgun in your home state of Maryland, per Federal and Maryland law.
Maryland has a complicated and restrictive law governing magazine capacity and "regulated" guns which your Maryland dealer is required to know and comply.
If you are moving into Maryland, part of the law requires registration of certain guns you already own.
Carry licenses are tightly restricted in MD (may issue).

I never heard of a "MD compliant Shield" as a separate item.

It means it's on the approved list and has magazines of 10 rounds or less. But as noted, I don't think there is a Shield that wouldn't meet these requirements.

Thanks, but I think there's more to it. On bass pro they have the shield at $439.00 then shield Md compliance $479.00

See Budsgunshop. California and Mass. but no Maryland. I have ordered several pistols from Buds and had them shipped to Maryland. I just got a M&P Pro delivered to my FFL last week. No "Maryland compliant" issue as it shipped with two 10-round factory magazines. The Shield is on the approved handgun roster on the Maryland State Police website. If you are in Maryland make sure you join <MDShooters.com>. A search there shows no topics related to "Maryland compliant Shield".

Out of curiosity i went to the SW site and on the compliant page it does have MD versions listed of various models. I didnt catch the difference on the shield unless maybe it has something to do with a trigger? Or its the same as CA and they just separate the list for those residents.

I see "MA" and "CA" compliant on the Shield but no "MD". Again for the pistols where the standard magazine is greater than 10 rounds, the "MD" compliant means it comes with 10 round magazine.

In eastern Maryland do you get the "wanna be" castoff local politicians from DC? I have noted that the Eastern half of the state is completely different from the western in geography, economy and politics. The western half being more like West Virginia and the eastern like DC. The eastern half drags the western half with it into liberal laws and rules that sometimes would make a Massachusetts senator blush. I never heard of Maryland compliant, but I would not be surprised that some of the King's official folks in Annapolis assume that there just naturally is a need for such a thing.

It is far too liberal here in the DC burbs. I am sure it is very different in the central and western counties. But I have been "behind the lines" most of my life. I was born in the Boston burbs, moved to Annapolis and later the DC burbs in the 1980s, and I work in academia. I am relocating to a very liberal island in Puget Sound this year. At least in Washington state you can get a carry permit.

On the S&W website, SKU 10035 is listed in the "Maryland Compliant" section and is also listed under M&P Shield were it doesn't state anything about being "Maryland Compliant." Same SKU. Same gun. Same price - $449. Anyone that is charging more for the "Maryland Compliant" version is scamming.

Moved here to NC from MD. There are actually 3 Marylands, but only one law...the western 1/3 is like WV, the middle 1/3 is like DC/Baltimore (only criminals carry guns), and the Eastern Shore is hunters, farmers, regular folks, but they all have to live within the state law, which is ridiculously tough.

Not the Eastern Shore, they are VERY conservative, unfortunately Baltimore and Prince Georges counties over ride them.

From some of what I've seen concerning Maryland the MD compliant Shield has probably been converted to a single shot semi auto with the installation of a 30 lbs. recoil spring. That would insure that the slide won't budge unless you are Hoss Cartright and can rack that slide for a second shot.

PS; for those too young to recognize the name Hoss Cartright you have been severely deprived.

I've found what is meant by Maryland compliant, in Maryland you cannot purchase a M&P shield performance center, regular shield is ok. Thanks for everyone's assistance. Glad you guys are out there

Why is the PC model not MD compliant? Is it just because it is new and not on the MD handgun roster?
