I bought the M&P Shield 9mm last year and have enjoyed shooting it. At $10 and change for Perfecta ammo for 50 rds its not really bad but if you get on a roll you can go through a few bucks fast. I figured I would look into the M&P Compact 22. I liked what I read and saw. A 10rd clip in the state of CT is ok so I called up one of the largest gun shops in the state and wanted to know price and availability. I was told that because it has a threaded barrel they don't (or can't) carry them. Any suggestions as to a comparable 22 for practice?
Thanks

I use a model 622 ( no longer made ) for that. I have 5 of the 10 round magazines for it.

This one has a threaded barrel as well... They all do. It comes with a thread protector and no adapter.

It's in the description of the gun you linked to...

Interesting... how does it work if the barrel doesn't extend past the slide?

All MP22 Compact barrels have threads at the muzzle. They are 13mm, IIRC and stop at the end of the slide.

The standard Compact version comes with a thread protector only that covers these threads and slightly increases in size in order to center the slide (and the sights) on the barrel. This adaptor has flats machined into it at 180° for a small wrench.

The suppressor ready version has a thread protector that extends past the end of the slide that has additional male 1/2"-28 threads. This protector also has a slight increase at the end to center the slide and had those same flats for a wrench. This type of thread adaptor has to be removed to disassemble the pistol.

Seems like they (S&W or the dealers) could permanently attach the thread protector and be GTG.

It's actually a barrel nut, not a thread protector.
