Hello, new member here. I just received my new M&P 40 pistol and was looking at the take down procedure in the instructions which indicates using the takedown tool and flipping the sear deactivation pin upward, which then allows the slide to be removed from the frame, and this method works fine for removing my slide.

I saw online that there is a quicker method to remove the slide without using the tool by depressing the trigger (dry fire); the magazine is removed, the slide is opened into a fixed position and the takedown lever is flipped downward, then the slide is closed and while pressing the trigger the slide is supposed to be released for removal. I have tried doing this and I am unable to remove the slide while pressing the trigger. The trigger just seems to depress without engaging the action and therefore the slide doesn't unlatch for removal. Am I doing something wrong, or is there some type of magazine safety that is preventing the trigger to function with the mag removed? Your feedback is appreciated.

You nailed it, I would say your gun has a magazine safety. Does it have the warning on the slide saying the gun will fire without a magazine? If not, it has the magazine safety.

dswancutt it does NOT have the warning message you mentioned below, so mine must have a magazine safety on it. Looks like I will need to use the conventional method (which really isn't that much more difficult) to take down the gun. Thanks!

After locking back the slide, I've simply been using my pinky finger to lower the sear deactivation lever on my M&Ps for the take down procedure since 2007 and it's virtually instantaneous.

No reason at all to bother use the "tool".

Hi Kdrymer, I tried the take down method you mentioned above and it never worked on my M&P. I even went on Youtube and noticed I had to do something sliiiiiightly different in order to take it down without the tool.
1. First, (with a magazine still in the magwell), I lock the slide back.
2.Next, turn the take down lever in the down position.
3.Then close the slide.
4.Here's where it's a little different for my pistol. Once the slide is close, pull the trigger. This makes the slide jump forward just a tad bit, but it doesn't come off yet.
5.Then release the magazine.
6. Now pull the slide off.

This takes all of 5 seconds to do. I figured it out through trial and error because my manual doesn't show how to take it down without using the lever and older models are able to take it down with the magazine out, but mine needed the mag in so that I could pull the trigger.

Hope this helps. I'd be curious to see if this works for you. Please let us know. Thanks.

Newbie: How did you take my M&P apart so fast?
I: Just like the S&W manual says, I push down the sear release.
Newbie: I didn't see you do it.
I: Took all of 2 seconds with my pinkie finger. Here, a pen works fine too. Or one of the Q tips I keep on the bench..
Newbie: But some guy on the internet said it was so hard and............

i have learned a cheap bic ball point pen with the insert removed works perfect for me as the opening grabs the little lever quite nicely.

I've used the 'trigger' method in the past but doing one more step adds no real time so figured I may as well follow the instructions

Seems kind of cumbersome when it's so easy to push down the sear deactivation lever. And there better not be a round in that magazine...

Easy as pie and maybe quicker than playing around with the lever. Ammo is always in the other room. Besides, the slide won't lock back with ammo in it anyways! Works like a charm.

I can flip the sear disconnect lever down with my pinkie finger in only a second or two.

Why introduce Glock Leg into my life when I don't even own one of them?
