Default I need your help

I've had a 9mm Shield for about a year and it's been a great little handgun. Never had any failures of any kind. This morning I field stripped it, cleaned and oiled it and tried to put it back together. I found that I couldn't move the slide back far enough for the slide lock to engage. Then I noticed that about 1/4" of the recoil rod is sticking out of the gun. I've tried everything I know, and just can't get it either back together or get the slide back off. Any ideas?

I don't own a single S&W auto pistol (but I do own many others)

Sounds like you don't have the rear of the recoil spring/rod properly seated against the barrel locking lug. I am sure there is a half moon cutout in the locking lug for the recoil spring/rod assembly to seat in for reassembly.

There isn't really a cut out so it's pretty easy to break the rod. I would look too make sure the rod is straight.

You guys assumption agreed with mine. I just couldn't figure out how to fix it. I finally pulled the slide back a little over half way and wiggled the recoil rod up and down. After a couple of tries, it dropped in place and I was able to reassemble it. Thanks for your help!
