Question for shield owners
What handguns did you consider when you purchased your shield? I am considering a shield and am also looking at the springfield xds and the m&p 9c. I am curious what made you go with the shield? My biggest pro is the price

I have the XDS in 45. I prefer the shield in 9mm. Better ergos for me. That's really about all there is to it for me.

I have a Springfield XDM 5.25" barrel in 45 ACP. It's a good target pistol. Also have a 9mm & 45 Shield. I much prefer the 45. Before shooting the 45 Shield, I was wondering how well it would do accuracy & recoil wise against the XDM. It really has exceeded my expectations. I'm very happy with it.

Question for shield owners
I had the XDS in 45 and 9mm, didn't like it too much, trigger was horrible, didn't like the FO sights either, and it is kind of heavy gun. The shield is slimmer, lighter and cheaper, another option is the g43 but will cost you more. you can't go wrong with the shield, It is an awesome gun. I suggest trying to find a range where you can rent one. The shield 45 is very nice too, some people don't like the aggressive texture especially for carry. Only advantage of the 9c is the larger mag capacity, it depends which one conceals better for you.

I bought a M&P Shield Performance Center 40. Replaced the sights with Combat Night sights and love the way it shoots. Prefer hanging 2 liter Pepsi bottles at 5/7 yards and blowing them away. Statistically You are looking at much closer ranges probably contact distance self defense shooting. Spending to try to hit distance targets sort of defeats the reason for the Shield. It is your last hope for survival statistically.

At the time I was looking at the S&W Shield .40 I was also looking at the Beretta Nano. (Thank goodness for the internet and the many reviews of the Nano.) The GLOCK 43 didn't exist and the Springfield XD didn't appeal to me.
The Shield's dimensions and handling qualities sold me. The reasonable price didn't hurt either. I have been carrying the Shield for some time now and am very pleased with its handling and accuracy.

I looked at the XD. Did not like the grip safety, high bore axis, blocky shape--but it is a good reliable gun.
The M&P 9c has the same grip width double stack as the Full Size. The grip is just shorter, so a little harder to use, unless you use an extended mag, in which case, carry the full size. The shorter barrel is not really necessary for concealment unless you pocket carry. However, there are devotees who love these compacts and shoot them very well. I would prefer and do carry a FS most of the time.
I carry my Shield as either deep concealment in Thunderwear or AIWB with a light covering garment (t-shirt). That's not too often, but because it is lighter and flatter it fits this role for me.
So the Shield is the second of two guns I carry. I don't need the in-between size 9c or XD, but if you only carried one gun, then it might be a good consideration because of increased capacity primarily.
Don't let cost persuade you one way or another. An extra $150-200 should be of little concern when making an important purchase like this. Get to a range if you can that rents these guns and spend some coin trying them out. That will serve you better than my or anyone else's advice.
If $$ is a big factor, then find which one you like and buy one used.

Price and caliber. I wanted a 40 and there was really no other single stack offering in that caliber at that time.

I had a MP 9c, was a good gun just didnt care much for shooting it without using a full size mag. Knew if i didnt shoot it much i wouldn't train to carry it. So went up to a full size MP 9 for range and home, and got a Shield for when i will carry. The Shield fits me well and i shoot it better than my compact (without full size mags). I prefer the ergonomics of the MP line and do not worry about their triggers so stick with those over other brands.

I had an XD mod2 and was carrying it, but a little large, and blocky. I got my wife a G43, she needs an easy slide to rack and something smaller for her hands, and it fit the bill for her. I shot it fairly well and started carrying it more and more. Since the G43 was her gun, I didn't shoot it much on range day, and didn't like the fact I wasn't spending much time with my carry gun. The G43 was ok, but not great ergos a little too small, and still blocky albeit smaller. I was considering the XDS so I would have similar ergos and controls as the Mod2. Then I tried a Shield, and I couldn't believe how comfortable it is, and how well I shoot it. I then rented a full size M&P and like that also. I traded the Mod2 for the shield PC and then picked up the 9l PC...and been very happy.
+1 rent everything you are considering best advice. Try to really test drive them though, not just a couple of mags, put a couple of hundred rounds down range on each...unless you hate one of them right away lol...that probably will just get worse.

Question for shield owners
I tried a few of the smaller mouse guns like the Ruger and others as I searched for concealability and kinda worked up to the larger Shield as I shopped. The XD just didn't appeal to me. When I handled the Shield I knew it was the one, it fit me well and when I shot it had great balance. I've carried it daily IWB for several years and I've handled quite a few guns since which have tempted me, but for my hands and my needs it's just perfect. I bought it on sale for $349 but the price wasn't a consideration I would have paid more honestly.

I bought the shield 9mm because it's size was easier for me to conceal, it's reliablilty, and cost. I paid a little more for mine because I bought it with night sights which I really like. So far I have over 700 rounds through it with no failures of any kind using different brands of ammo.

I considered the FN 9c because of the higher capacity but couldn't find one nearby when I was ready to buy. I'm not unhappy with the Shield but I will own a 9c in the future.

I either own or sold almost every single-stack concealed carry pistol made. The 9mm & .45 Shields suit me best because of the numerous upgrades and accessories available; triggers, sights, holsters, etc. For higher capacity carry, I have a Glock 19 and a Walther PPQ. Sold my M&P 9 Compact.

The XDs in 45 is not a fun gun to shoot. For a subcompact gun I'd stick with 9mm. Hard to beat the shield.

For me, it was a close call between the Shield and the Walther PPS M2. The Walther trigger felt a bit better and the grip was very nice. The Walther was a few ounces heavier and had less aftermarket support. Plus it was a little more expensive. That combined with the Shields rep for reliability and lower weight won out.

I rotate the Shield 9 and the 9C. I don't find the 9C any more difficult to conceal, but I can definitely "feel" it more when I carry it. I'm in Mass so 10 rounds is it. I don't know where you're located but here in mass ,my shield is my "summer" carry and my 9C (and an XDM 3.8C .45) are my usual Winter carries. Clothing options and whether or not I am going to be sitting down and removing my coat come into play when I choose which one is going out today. I shoot the 9C better than the shield outside of 10 yards, inside? pretty much the same.

Do they make a full size mag with extended grip for M&Pc and if so where would you get one?

45 shield
Held the shield 45 at LGS could not believe how it fit my hand! Had the xds 45 sent it back for recall turned the the trigger to garbage. felt like a 13lb pull, got rid of that now carrying the G-30 like the trigger on the Glock. Soon as I held the shield knew I had to have it so it came home with me. Have about 1300 rds thru it most of my reloads not 1 problem so far, will start carrying it soon as I get a holster for it! luv it soo far.

had a XDs 45 and liked it and for a 45 in a small package it was very manageable with recoil. would actually like another. or maybe a Shield in 45. I looked at some of the smaller Sigs as well and settled on the Shield I have in 9mm. its small light and easy to hide and shoots well

I compared the Shield against the XD-S and the LC9. Being an XD fan (and hating the factory triggers of the M&P FS or M&Pc), I expected to go home with an XD-S.
Shooting the 3 side-by-side, I preferred the Shield over the other two. The factory trigger of the LC9s is a little nicer than that of the Shield, but the perceived recoil (in MY hands) was smoother with the Shield than either the XD-S, or LC9 (lower bore axis?).
Before making your purchase, try to actually shoot each that you're considering and go with the one that performs better for YOU.

Shield 9 here.
Price, reputation, slim... my main reasons.
Like most though I have become more of a gun nut and would like others. I've got a p238 which I like because it is smaller than the Shield.
The Shield 45 just became available in MA and of course I'd like to try one out. I held a 9c and it was wonderful... wouldn't mind one of those. The list goes on. LOL
One of my friends has a H&K VP9 and that shoots great for me. Another one just went through his carry class and is settling on the H&K p30sk.
Best option as someone stated already, find a range to rent them and try as many as possible.

Having owned both the XDS9 and a Shield (which I still have), I much prefer the Shield. As pointed out, it's lighter, less bulky, and cheaper, and I personally shot that thing like ****. The pistol was 100% reliable, but I had a really tough time shooting it accurately (offhand).
I generally like to pocket carry, and the XDS was square and clunky, and just wasn't a smooth pistol, externally (compared to the Shield).
Also, I believe the mags are easier to find deals on, and the Shields seem to have better resale-trade potential ( I always like to factor both of those in, when possible). From what I see on the classifed sites, Shields are very in demand, and get more attention and move faster than Springfields.
edit: I'm hearing great reports on the Shield 45, and I surely wouldn't kick one out of bed. But for me personally, I don't want a 45 pistol with anything less than a 4" barrel. I think a quality 9mm SD round has better performance out of a real short barrel (both ballistically and in cycling).

Yep as noted ebay is an option for the xgrip; at the time i got mine from Greg Cote llc where i picked up an extra full size mag to go with it. I would assume the xgrip is available at other sites as well. Mine worked just fine, only wrapped a little elec tape around the mag (underneath the adapter) to prevent it from sliding. Wasnt a big issue though

I considered the 9c but didn't want to extra width for CC. I didn't look at a Springfield because, at the time, I was leery of the grip safety. I no longer am so maybe I'd give it a consideration for future purchases. I'd like to say that I did all this research and gave it all this due consideration but basically I liked the look and feel of it and trust the Smith & Wesson name. It was available and the price was right so I went for it.

I tried all the single stack 9s. For me, it came down to the Shield and the Glock 43. My other EDC is a G19, so I thought I would prefer the Glock, but in the end the Shield had better ergos and, for me, it was just a better shooter. It was also just more fun to shoot. Not as snappy, for me, as the G43.
I also looked hard at the Glock 42, but in the end decided to go with a 9mm because I have so many and I don't have a .380. Just easier to have consistent ammo.

I have the Shield 9. I was looking at that. the Glock 43 and the Ruger lc9s. e Glock wasn't worth the extra money. The Ruger was about the same price. The Shield just seemed the best for me. Mine has a great trigger and isn't ammo sensitive at all. No regrets.

Hi,
If I may add my two cents. As the old saying goes, "Opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one, and they all stink".
Anyway, I EDC'd a Canik 55 TP9 for well over a year. I wanted something lighter, slimmer, good feel in my hand, I could shoot well, and cost between $350 to $400. A side benefit of the Shield is the outstanding array of after market kits and accessories. The Shield fit the bill in every category.
I shot a Glock 43 (Son-in-laws), Ruger LC9s, Shield and Kahr CW9. Played with an XDS at a gun shop. I liked the Ruger trigger the best. But was told about the APEX trigger kits, and did some research.
I purchased the Shield for $340. I used the money from the Canik to pay for the Apex Duty/Carry Kit and Action Enhancement Trigger (100-051). I used the stock trigger spring. Trigger pull is 4lbs and the gun shoots well for me. I also added XS Big dots sights.
The Shield for me, is easy to carry and use as a point and shoot gun. I also like the easy take down and cleaning of the Shield. I guess I am now an S&W supporter. So much so I purchased an M&P Pro 9mm for open carry. I love both of these guns. My Ruger 45s just sits in the gun case now. Oh well...
As for my son-in-law and his Glock love affair. He shot the Shield and did say in has some nice merits. I think buying and using guns is like buying and using trucks. Everybody has his or her favorite. Whether it's a Ford or Chevy or Dodge. The important part is that you like what you buy and most important with regard to a gun, is that you can shoot it well.
I hope all of this helped, :-)

Obviously a big S&W fan. Reading reviews headed me towards the Shield 9mm and the price put me over the fence. Haven't looked back since I bought mine almost 600 rounds ago.
I will admit that until I bought a mag loader I was not thrilled with the Shield. After I bought it I had the perfect semi IMHO.

setting the base of the mag down on a smooth hard surface makes hand loading much easier and letting new mag loads sit for some weeks helps smoke in the springs. But I too use the loader when seriously shooting those pesky pepsi bottles by the box full..We use a lot of Pepsi 2 liters at my house. Lol

I looked at the g43, lc9s, and xds9. I couldn't justify the the additional money on the glock, and its ergonomics didn't appeal to me. The lc9s didn't wow me, guess having the lc9 previously left that impression. The xds didn't fit my hand like I was hoping it did. That left the Shield. Even after a year, I still shoot it well, but find myself reaching for a wheel gun or 1911. It'll be a matter of time before it, and the other 2 remaining plastic guns go away for another Smith wheelgun and a 1911, maybe even a Smith in that one, if I can get past the external extractor.

I chose both but have since sold the Shield 9 when I bought the Shield 45. I still have the PPS M2 as my single stack 9mm. I was able to shoot the Glock 43, XDs, Shield, and PPS at my LGS range. Didn't care for the 43 at all and the reason for not getting the XDs was because of the grip safety.

I considered the Sig P938/P238 but went with the Shield because my whole hand fitted better in the grip. Also thought about the XD but there was only the XDM avaliable and it was hella expensive, so for the size and price also went with the shield.
Gotta say, i dont regret my choice at all! Maybe I regret not having considered the P320, dont know why I didnt, but still the Shiled is awesome, cant go wrong with that one

P320 is quite a bit larger than a shield, or a 9C for that matter.

I've got that pachmyr sleeve on my shield as well, it's made a huge difference with my accuracy

I will admit that until I bought a mag loader I was not thrilled with the Shield. After I bought it I had the perfect semi IMHO.

I saw your review on amazon on that Fixxer grip haha that inspired me to order one, just did!
PD: At the risk of going off topic here, saw one review saying it didn't come in the same color as the gun, is that true?

By the time...
By the time I got to where I knew what I wanted, it was a Shield.
I bought an S&W5943 first semi.
Then, dangerous situations spiked for several reason and for a stopgap I got a Kel Tec P11.
But I wanted a Shield, so when it got to where I could afford one, (I'm retired on a tight budget) I bought one.

I'm happy with the color match on my sleeve. I also highly recommend the different base plate for the seven round magazine. I now have a place for my pinkie to go and I believe it has helped me steady my front sight. The only downside is all of my other mags are eight round.

I'm going to throw my .02 in on this thread.
I just opened the box on my new M&P shield .45 about 10 minutes ago and so far I love it, especially the textured grip. I had a side by side shotgun I traded for it. I haven't owned anything since 3rd gen went out of production in the S&W line and still own a few of them along with a couple older revolvers. I figured it was time to give Smith another chance to regain my business.
So I'm heading out to the range this weekend to blast through a couple hundred rounds to see how it holds up. Also I want to see how it stacks up to my wife's XDS .45.
On another note, I do have a small rant and question in the same sentence. Since this gun is so new to the market, there aren't a lot of holsters, especially leather holsters out there for this gun that are left handed and I don't see any grip extensions as well. Is it me or is still to new for all the goodies.
any ideas would be great

I bought both the XDS 45 and the Shield 9 because i like them both. I had the XDS first. Really wanted a 45 and the shield didn't come in a 45 at the time. Both are great, but honestly i prefer my XDS. For some reason its easier to conceal for me even thou it weighs 2.5 oz more. They are both great guns and carry both. There isn't a ton of recoil on the XDS 45. Its not that noticible for me at least against a 9mm. Maybe slightly but the XDS does a great job at masking the bigger round. I will say it again, when i leave the house i just grab one, don't really think about it, but if i am in shorts and a tshirt then the XDS usually gets picked. Easier to conceal.
When i bought the XDS, it cost more obviously. however, i got 3 mags. They were offering a mail in which made it 3. Came with a nice case as well along with a external mag holster. It was a classy setup and the gun is high quality. On the other hand so is the shield but mine came in a cardboard box, 2 mags and that was it. AGain, both are great guns. Can't go wrong with either. But i suggest if you can't make up your mind buy them both.

We already had a full fixed M&P and love it. We looked at a Glock and the SCCY. Shot the Glock and Shield (both about same size) at a dealer that also rents guns at their range. They both felt the same so but the brand we already knew and trusted.

I considered the XDS and the LC9 (Glock 43 and LC9s didn't exist at the time), quickly dismissed both in favor of the Shield 9. Didn't like the feel of the aggressive grip on the XDS...or the price, and heard bad things about Ruger customer service. The Shield was priced right, and I have experience - all good, with S&W customer service.
We have a winner!

it does , comparing the Compact vs an M&P 9C the P320 is much larger. the SC is still quite a bit larger than a shield as well.
Nice gun just be aware it's not a "small" gun by any means

I have a Sig 320 40 subcompact, it is a sweet shooting accurate at 20 feet firearm. Sort of a hog to carry but nice to shoot. A very good night self defense firearm out of its safe. Love my Shield pc40.

I liked the 9mm Shield w/o a manual safety and the Ruger LC9s Pro. I couldn't decide which one I liked better, so I bought both. I've had them for about a year, and to be honest, I still don't know which one I like the best. I like the feel of the Shield best, but the trigger on mine is HEAVY. It breaks clean, but it's heavy. The Ruger's trigger pull is much lighter and smooth, but the travel and reset is longer. (Not nearly as long as the old LC9, but longer than the Shield) I seem to shoot them equally well. The Ruger is lighter and slightly slimmer, but felt recoil is greater because of the weight difference. Both conceal IWB nicely. In other words, I like them both a lot and alternate shooting and carrying them.

My suggestion is you go to somewhere you can hold and handle all three....a large LGS or a gun show. For me, the XD had a strange grip angle and seemed blocky. The Shield fit my hand perfectly and felt better to me than the M&P 9c. My purpose is concealed carry. The Shield was also the most concealable comfortably for me.
Your preferences may differ from mine and any other posts you read here, which is what I suggest handling everything you're considering.
