Default Shield mag release rusting fixed?

so had the shield mag release "rusting" issue been fixed yet? meaning does S&W provide a NON mim steel part like a stainless steel part that doesn't really need maintenance? down here in AZ it gets hot as hell and moisture gets into the mag catch quite often. I've mitigated the problem by taking out the mag release whenever I clean and just coat it in clp or outers rust preventative oil, but it's kinda sucky that a popular gun like this has a mim steel part in a place that's hard to get to and REALLY could deter function of the gun if not checked (most people are NOT going to check their mag release buttons and no other gun I know of has this issue)

before I started oiling the mag catch every 2 weeks, yes. pop out the spring, pull out the catch, wipe down, coat with oil, replace... so far no more rusting but it's a PAIN having to pull it out EVERY single field strip. Something I've never had to do to another gun.. A mag release is something most people NEVER check in a gun... I mean, I can continue to pop it out and oil it, but I'd be worried over time that popping out that spring so many times will bend/tweak it enough to be a problem

I bet it is more humid here in south florida, and never had any rust issues on any M&P part, including the mags also I don't clean my guns right after shooting.

I doubt there's been a design change to address this.

I was barely able to get my Shield's mag release out when it rusted, almost to the point of being seized. After cleaning the rust off, I coated the surfaces with the TW25b lube that I use for the sliding surfaces. I've found that lube stays where you put it. I've not had to reapply.

haha, yeah grease tends to do that. TW25b is good stuff but I can't get it locally, might grab a tube of outers gun grease from the store and do the same thing. stays put a lot more than oil would in that area.

Shield's Mag release is metal and the FS is plastic! I am wondering why?

hold a magnet up to it. I think they're all polymer coated mim steel parts. My 9c and my shield both have metal interiors

You are right!
Took mine out and examined it. It as a small metal inserted blade in the plastic button.

the blade is just the part that's sticking out. the whole thing is actually metal with a thin coating of polymer. that blade is the part that comes in contact with the metal magazines (it's the mag "catch"), if it was coated in polymer for that blade sticking out the metal magazines would tear it up in no time

Default Shield mag release rusting

My release rusted also. In southern Florida and carry concealed in holster. May be in part due to body moisture. I used gun oil and wroked the button back and forth for a while. It loosened up and now seems to OK.

Best to remove the release button, clean the rust off, and apply a lube for protection.
