Tough M&P 9mm Magazine Springs & Follower Design
My complaint is that the 17 rd magazines are impossible to fill without a loader.
I can't even load the first round!! I'm 6ft 1 and don't have arthritis!
I have shot handguns for 60 years and have never met magazines like this.
I think the problem is due to the weird follower design with its strange sharp angles combined with extra tough magazine springs.
Hopefully S&W has a better follower for my 2 magazines.
Needless to say this could be a life threatening problem in a defense situation (if I don't have a UpLula with me!!

First, I'd have to say that if 17 rounds (or 18, if you carry
+ 1) don't get it done, you may be in more trouble than you can handle...so running would be the better option, if possible.
Second, carry one or two additional fully loaded magazines...giving you 34 or 61 rounds available. If THAT capacity doesn't handle it, you really are in too much trouble! Run, call the police, spray them with urine and/or diarrhea, or all of these.

Get plenty of range time in using a UpLula , mag springs will ease a little after use . No other followers are available that I know of.

Odd . . . I find the first round difficult to insert due to the shape of the follower, but after that mine are pretty easy to load - all four of them. Maybe you got some with the wrong springs installed or the springs are installed wrong or something.

Some I can and some I can't...
The ones that I can't load easily I use the loader for. I keep it in my range bag so it's with me at the range, too. Better than making my fingers sore from trying pry rounds into the mag with my fingers.
And they will loosen up.

Echo what TX-Dennis stated. Once I get the first round in, no further difficulties.

I also found the 17 round mags impossible to load. My dealer
recommended me to call S&W CS. The rep offered to send 2 new
springs (tested to the current specs) for free. They came in 2 days.
While they seemed slightly lighter, they eventually loosened up
with use. However, the uplula is the way to go if you want to use the full capacity. Cant beat the S&W CS.

I got a 9c and the 10rders are the same. Took some practice to load that 1st round.
It rolls as you insert it. So dont fight it. Makes it easier.

If things are so Sketchy that you're loading loose rounds into a magazine you're going to need more help than an UpLula can provide

When I first got my M&P I had this problem (The Shield is worse) but after I switched to these magazines
I never had that problem again

There are days my hands cramp easily so I’ll rely on my Uplula whether for my Shield or Full size 9. Doesnt matter if at the range, walking family land, or at home; pre-loaded mags are what I would need and use so hand loading under duress would be a rare situation. Though I still ‘practice’ it on occasion.
That said, i do notice the mags get a little easier after use.

Give me a few minutes and I'll have a video on how to do this. It's easier than you might think.

Here's a quick video on how to get that first round started.
