Hey guys, quick question. I have an M&P 9mm 2.0 5 inch. I have removed the loaded chamber indictor and replaced it with the apex no profile indictor/plug. But, I want to save even more weight and just remove it. It is safe to use with the loaded chamber indictor totally removed and just the open space? Oh, I live in a non-commie state that does not require it. Thanks.

I'd be concerned that it would leave a point of entry for lint, dirt, etc. If you don't like it sticking up you can always file down the contact point until it just lays flat.
It's hard to give an advice to a sport gun, because every modify sacrifice reliability...but...

Ugh, I’d rather have the hole than the erection.
Upon further checking, I believe a tactile loaded chamber indicator is a California law.

I want to remove my loaded chamber indicator because I believe it's the source of weaker ejection, and occasional brass to the face. Have you shot it without the loaded chamber indicator yet ? I'm dying to know lol. You already answered a question I was going to research regarding Apex having one for the five inch 2.0. I really want to know if your ejection pattern improved after removing the loaded chamber indicator. Thanks !

No worries there, the M & P in any form hasn't been CA compliant for nearly 4 years now.
Of course, the positive side is that all violent crime in the state has been eliminated thanks to that.

your not looking at an ounce or even something close to that. Considering the potential for unwanted debris causing reliability issues saving something like 1/4 ounce is not a reasonable choice.

Looking at my five inch model, it seems it would just leave a witness hole like the 2.0 compacts have if removed, milled down, or replaced with an Apex that just fills in the gap on the slide, and doesn't touch the bullet casing.

The mass of the slide and recoil spring are a specific formula(in order for the gun to cycle properly). If you remove mass( weight) from the slide, wouldn't you have change (to stronger) the recoil spring to compensate?

UPDATE: I replaced my stock loaded chamber indicator (LCI) with the Apex NO PROFILE loaded chamber indicator in my five inch 2.0 in .40 cal. The weak and erratic ejection I was having is gone. The Apex No Profile LCI basically does away with the whole loaded chamber indicator. It just fills in the gap. Now it's just like the compact models...there is the same sized small hole to view in to see if there is a round in the chamber. The OEM LCI by Smith and Wesson touches the bullet casing, and affects the ejection of the spent casing. I had occasional weak ejection, and it was erratic on where the casings would go. Occasionally spent casings were coming back to the brim of my hat or on top of my head. BUT NO MORE HA !!! I was correct in my assumption of that's what was causing the problem. With the Apex No Profile LCI installed, the spent casings all eject strong and land in the same spot...a nice little pile of brass easy to pick up. The five inch model (mine is a .40 cal) only ejects the spent casings about half the distance of the compact model. I'm guessing the weight of the longer slide may be the reason for it. But the five inch barreled pistol is throwing the casings a good 7 or 8 feet away now - which is plenty strong enough ejection. Very disappointed Smith put a LCI that negatively effects the ejection of the spent casings, but very happy Apex sells a $19.00 part that fixes it. I highly recommend switching to the Apex. Does it effect Smith's warranty ? I don't know...I also don't care...love all 3 of my 2.0 M&P's. (.40 compact...9mm compact...5 inch .40 cal) Now if you will excuse me, I have two 2.0 pistols to clean after 500 rounds of flawless fun in the sun shooting. Hope this helps someone scratching their head about why their five inch 2.0 ejects so erratic. Carry on... : )
