I have a ton of .22 LR ammo on hand and with the price of 9mm going up and availability going down, I'm considering an M&P 22 Compact or Ruger SR22 for the range. I'm leaning more towards the M&P because I already have several M&P center fires.

Can anyone comment on the accuracy of the M&P 22 as compared to the SR22? I've watched several old You Tube videos and some say the M&P is very accurate, some say not so much. I don't expect it to be as accurate as my Mark I 678 Target model, but is there any reason not to buy the M&P 22 Compact?

I own a M&P 22 Compact and I really like mine. It is reliable and eats pretty much any 22 ammo. It is as accurate as I am. The light weight of the pistol has a bearing on the accuracy if the person behind the trigger is unable to hold it steady. I also previously owned a Ruger SR22 and sold it. I like the M&P 22 Compact better. I would say buy it. I think you'll like it.
 
A Compact owner here and must say it has been a great little .22 - accurate and reliable. Mine has the threaded barrel and also works great suppressed.
 
I had a Compact 22 and it was a fun and reliable (no ammo issues) plinker. It was not close to being as accurate as my Buckmark is; though I didnt expect it to be. I ended up moving on from my Compact into a SW Victory as a second 22. That is similar to my BM in accuracy and fun, with the bonus of coming with more std features and easy to break down to clean.

For me, the Compact 22 does fill a need and i can say it is a good little gun. But i would not choose one over a Victory, a BM, or guess a Ruger Mk 4 unless the Compact was noticeably lower in cost.

I've had the chance to compare my 22 Compact to a neighbors SR22 on several occasions. Accuracy difference between the two is negligible, but since I own three other M&Ps I thought the Ruger just felt odd, especially with that bassackward safety. My neighbor would never admit it, but I think he likes the Compact more than his SR.
 
I have a 22 compact and have found it to be a very reliable and enjoyable pistol. While the gun is accurate I find it hard to shoot accurately due to its light weight and trigger that feels much more like a typical M&P trigger than the light and crisp trigger on my M41. If I very carefully and slowly squeeze the trigger or shoot it off a rest I can see my 22 compact is capable of very good accuracy. But shooting offhand at a faster pace I don't come close to utilizing that accuracy.

If you want something that feels like your other M&Ps get the 22 compact but do not expect to shoot it any better than you would a Shield. If you want something you can shoot much more accurately than your M&Ps get something like a Ruger Mark 4, Browning Buckmark or S&W Victory. But don't expect your ability to drive tacks with your big, heavy 22 target pistol to carry over into how well you shoot your M&Ps.

Love my M&P 22 Compact. I shoot CCI SV and it cycles great - never fails.
While it's not a "target pistol", I find it very accurate and just plain fun and cheap to shoot. Picked mine up from PSA when it was on sale for $249.
 
The 22 Compact is a fine field pistol, and though I haven't shot an SR22, the Compact should compare favorably. It's not a target piece like a steel frame rimfire with a good trigger (41, High Standard, Ruger MK, etc.).

I bought mine primarily as a suppressor host, and it runs fine with a variety of ammo. The only ammo I've found it won't cycle is CCI Quiet. With CCI SV, it's very quiet suppressed... no need for specialty ammo.

My only complaint is the rear sight design. After the blade popped out of the sight a half dozen times, I replaced the sights with a set from Dawson Precision and I've been happy ever since.

I also have had good luck with my M&P 22 Compact. Mine has been completely reliable and thrives on CCI SV. I also bought it as a suppressor host. However the gun gets the most use as a high volume practice piece for building muscle memory for weak hand shooting. I can run hundreds of repetitions a couple times a year to practice my weak hand shooting and not go broke. As others have stated, it will not compete with a true target 22 but I don't believe that was it's purpose. As a plinker with similar qualities to it's big brothers it works very well.
 
I too use my 22 Compact as an intensive shooting tool. Easily 5,000 rounds of various ammo and not one stovepipe, FTF, or FTC, it's as reliable as it gets in that regard and saves me a lot of $$ on 9mm ball ammo.

I do not regret the purchase, and it actually has a special place as a secondary HD piece.
 
The M&P 22 is a lot of fun, that's what I bought it for.
For target accuracy; my Ruger MK IV or S&W Model 17.
For varments, a .22 rifle.
 
M&P .22 Compact is an excellent choice. My Wife and Daughters love to shoot it. I found the accuracy of it is somewhat dependent on ammo choice. I bought a wide variety of different types of .22 ammo the last time we had an ammo scare. I find CCI to typically be the best choice.
My M&P .22 Compact has been very reliable - for a .22. Reliability is also somewhat ammo dependent though...
 
Hi from Murrells Inlet SC. I have ordered a S&W Compact 22 to go along with my S&W .380 shield EZ. The instructors at my range all swear by the compact. They say it is very accurate & easy to shoot. Can't wait to get one. Good luck.
