Anyone try the Hornady Subsonic 147 grain XTP cartridges in their M&P Shield M2.0?

Wondering what the overall consensus was as far as choosing it for self defense.

Here are a couple of sources of good data about self defense rounds:

Service Caliber Handgun Duty and Self-Defense Ammo

While the Hornady 147g XTP did OK in the Lucky Gunner tests, it did not make the recommended list in DocGKR's post in the Pistol Forum.

A subsonic round that did better in the Lucky Gunner tests and made DocGKR's recommended list, is the Federal 147g HST. I can personally vouch for this round as well. I have a VERY ammo-picky 1.0 Shield 9. However, after a lot of experimenting with a bunch of SD rounds, I found that the Federal 147g HST works perfectly in my Shield. I've shot 225 rounds of it without a single failure, so that's what I recommend.

In general, XTP is not know for expansion. They're deep penetrators, possibly to the point of overpenetrating.

Dr. Roberts' list, linked in swsig's post, is a good, simple list to choose from if you don't want to do a lot of research.

FWIW, my EDC has a 3.27" barrel, and I carry Federal 147gr HST.

Thanks to you both!

It so happened that while passing through a town I was able to pick up a box of the Hornadays at what I figured was a fair price given the ammo situation today and I had bought a box.

Had the chance to fire 4 rounds today of it.

As far as sound, it didnt seem any different than the FMJ training ammo I have been using. I wasnt LOOKING for "low sound" but that is what "subsonic" is supposed to mean, isnt it?

It fired and cycled fine, at least the 4 rounds, in my M&P 9 m2.0....at over a buck per round, wasnt gonna send any more down the line.

I am going to use it for daily carry since its hollow point and is less likely to go "through" someone attacking me and hurt someone not intended than FMJ (or so that is how I understand it).

God willing not even ONE of the 21 rounds I have left will EVER need to be used.

Subsonic refers to the velocity of the round, in that it travels less than the speed of sound. The "bang" won't be different, but if you use a suppressor it'll be a bit quieter because the bullet won't have the "crack" that supersonic bullets have when they leave the barrel/suppressor.

In general, hollowpoints won't overpenetrate, but XTP might because they're less likely to expand than other hollowpoints. Refer to the Lucky Gunner test in swsig's post. Granted, XTP will probably penetrate less than FMJ, so if those are your only 2 options, XTP would be the better choice.

It's always a good idea to run several rounds of whatever round you want to carry through your gun to make sure it'll be reliable. Some people recommend 100-200, or more, trouble-free rounds through their guns. At the very least, I like to run at least a few magazine-fulls of FMJ followed by a few magazine-fulls of JHP as a bare minimum. However, given the current ammo availability problems, it can be difficult to get enough carry ammo to properly function test your gun and still have enough to have in your gun to carry. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, even if it's less than ideal.

Just my opinion.

While I prefer the Hornady HST in 124gr, I have a fairly wide variety of HP ammo but just a few boxes of each (some only 2 boxes). The exception is some new Freedom Munitions 147gr XTP I bought a few years ago. I have a few hundred of these.

Many local stores that carry ammo usually carry range or hunting ammo. As you've noted, even in the best of times, HP ammo is relatively pricey. So I bought what I could find when I found it. Just a box or two.

So now I have HSTs, Hydrashocks, XTPs, PDX, Golden Sabres, Gold Dots and maybe even a few more.

My suggestion is buy 1 box on a fairly regular basis when you can. The "shortages" we currently see are going to get much worse before they improve.

Thanks all for the advice.

I have a couple thousand rounds of FMJ, just the 20 HPs...

Like I said , God willing the HPs will never be needed.
