After getting a small light and green laser for my .45 Shield, I was considering one for my fullsize 5 inch 9mm.
That .45 Shield is my everyday carry, and when things go bump in the night while camping, it's been comforting to 1) light up the scene, and 2) be able to target without having to line up sights.
The fact that the green laser is visible even in bright sunlight is a plus too.
To those that will inevitably say, you shouldn't be pointing a gun at something you haven't identified, that is your opinion which you are entitled to, but it is not going to sway my opinion.
I am astute enough to keep my finger off the trigger until I decide to shoot, and I live alone in the country with no curious teen age kids around.
If someone is prowling around the property at night, or my tent while dispersed camping, the response is going to be an armed one.
I am capable of ID'ing the target in a fraction of a second, then deciding if it is a threat to warrant pulling the trigger.
And yes, I do have handheld Surefire lights too.
The Lasermax on the Shield came in handy while camping last month. I was camping in the National Forest near Prescott, no other campers within several miles.
My big German WireHair Pointer was growling, I exited the tent with the Shield and lit up a half dozen good size Javelina around me. Too bad the season wasn't open yet.
I was considering getting a Streamlight TRL-8G, but they were running $270 and up.
I saw the Olight for $160, and after reading all favorable reviews, I ordered one.
It isn't a real small or light-weight option (nearly 5 ounces), you have to pay a lot more for that. I plan on not having the light mounted for casual carry, but can keep it in a canvas belt pouch if needed.
The Olight has a quick release lever, so easy to put on without needing a screwdriver or coin.
For more serious carry, I will put on my web belt which has a holster that will accommodate a larger light.
The only fault I can see so far is the switch that changes the mode from laser only, light only or both. It is on the bottom of the unit and can be moved fairly easily.
This light is rated at 1350 lumens. While it might not be a full 1350, it is BRIGHT. MY 600 Lumen Surefire handheld pales by comparison. You will for sure temporarily blind and confuse your opponent.
And the green laser seems very bright as well. I think I read where lasers are held to a certain power (5MW maybe ?) it is a lot more intense than the green Lasermax on my .45 Shield.
The beam is so intense it looks a though a mouse could walk along the beam all the way to the target.
Here is an article that highlights laser use and limitations:

I don't know if I agree with them saying a laser is not as effective beyond 20 feet though.
The green laser is not real visible in sunlight over 50 yards or so, but at night the range limit is more dependent on your weapon type and shooting ability.
With the Baldr Pro I can light up a hillside and see the laser several hundred yards away, although you'd never be shooting that far, at least with a handgun.
This "Desert Sand" version doesn't match the FDE M&P very well, but neither do the Streamlight FDE models. Streamlight make one that is a much darker shade of brown, and one that is a glossier bronze color, similar to the Olight Desert Sand one.
Here is a review by ScootchOO:
This full size Olight doesn't have the rechargeable option like the Olight Mini does. It takes 2 of the CR123A batteries.
There is an option to reduce the output to 300 lumens to save batteries.
(My Lasermax on the .45 Shield is only 100 lumens, barely enough, but it can be reduced to just 3 lumens. Maybe enough for map reading ?)
Here is the product description on Olight's website:

I know a light can stick out further than the muzzle with no ill effects other than some soot on the lens, but I prefer for it not to stick out.
This light would be too large for a Compact, maybe even a 4 1/4" full size, but for the 5 inch M&P it is a decent lower cost option.
