Early M&Ps had a 1:18 twist. This worked well for lighter bullets but heavier bullets, like 147gr don't stabilize well (according to the "experts"). At some point S&W switched to a 1:10 twist. I don't know when that occurred or how you can tell without actually checking the barrel. My M&Ps are all from 2013 and have a 1:10 twist. Some aftermarket "match" barrels may still have the slower twist.
I bought a 5" ported CORE slide kit for my fullsize in 2017. Topped it with an RMR. Shoots great but the front sight does get a bit dirty after a good range session. In 2020 I bought a Storm Lake 5" Stainless non-ported barrel on closeout. It also has a 1:16 twist.
Since I mostly shoot 124gr FMJs I can say I don't really feel much difference switching between the 2 barrels. I don't feel the ports do much for "standard pressure" 124 or 115 gr bullets. I do feel a bit of a difference shooting 147gr (also standard pressure) but not much to howl about. I am also equally accurate (or inaccurate) with either one.
KKM still makes 5" non-ported barrels for the M&P. They don't list the twist rate but perhaps someone else can tell.
There have been other other changes from early to later 1.0s. The sear housing went from a 1/16" sear return plunger to a 1/8". If you plan to drop in an aftermarket trigger (like Apex) you'll need the 1/8". Again, no easy way to tell without disassembly. Also the slide lock changed to make reset a bit more noticeable. The trigger bar also changed with the latest having an "H" stamped on it. A lot of this was done to improve the trigger feel and reset. The 1.0 triggers don't have a good reputation so many folks opt to APEX or other brand. Mine came with the older slide lock and trigger bar. I changed them to the updated ones. It improved a bit but still is a bit mushy.
S&W changed it all with the 2.0. I have a 2.0 trigger in it now.
M&P 1.0s have an optics cut different from the 2.0s that limit your choices of red dots. It's a bit shorter so red dots like the Delta Point Pro won't fit. However, there are still plenty of choices. The 1.0s came with steel plates whereas the 2.0 are plastic. If you buy it, check to make sure it comes with the full set of plates. The original plates are hard to find and pricey.
Overall, I like it!! Fits well, points well, shoots well.
