Hello All- Noob here, first post.

Just bought a new 5.7 at Academy Sporting Goods in Georgia.

As soon as I got it home, I tried to disassemble it per the manual instructions. Basically, remove the mag and then the slide stop pin. Both came out very easily.

The slide then moved forward about 1/4", and stopped. Obviously, something was blocking it from moving any further.

After playing with it for a bit, the slide finally came off.

This happened every time I tried to disassemble it. I contacted S&W Support and they suggested using the bottom end of a mag to tap on the back of the slide. That was no help.

This morning I tried disassembly once more, and now the slide is stuck about 1/4" open and it will NOT move in either direction. The mag will not go back in either.

I hate to send it back to S& W, because it will probably take weeks to get it back.

Any suggestions????? Thanks in advance for any input.

I don't have a 5.7 but I know with the other M&P's you have to release the striker by pulling the trigger or flipping the striker release lever.

Hope you figure it out without sending it in.

Watch a couple of videos on you tube that cover the m&p 5.7 dis & Re-assembly .

My equalizer is hit or miss taking the slide off Smith needs to look into this issues with some of their pistols.

I had the same thing happen with my M&P 5.7. I've learned that when I'm taking it down, I need to pull the slide back and release it, and let the force of the recoil spring push the slide off of the frame.

That said, it has also loosened up with use, so it's not really much of a problem anymore.

:oYES! This fixes the problem. It appears that when the hammer is sticking straight up (in the fired position as opposed to cocked and back) it is in the way of the slide cover plate-- the cover plate gets hung up on the hammer when trying to move the slide forward. When you are pulling the slide back, it is cocking the hammer back getting it out of the way of the slide cover plate.

If I am wrong about any of this, please let me know. Thanks for your help!

Did you ever figure out how to get it UN stuck?! Same thing has happened to me when trying to take the slide off but it is stuck stuck and I dont want to force it for obvious reasons. Problem is, it wont go forward OR backwards so I can't do the trick some people have posted.

***ANSWER***

First and MOST important... when disassembling, do NOT pull the trigger. Some firearms may need this to release the slide, this will CAUSE the above issue in the S&W M&P 5.7mm. Follow the above recommemdations on slide removal but IF you get it stuck, look at the images I have uploaded here to see what happens...

As you can see, pulling the trigger while removing the slide can not only cause it to get stuck, but to damage it as well. **DISCLAIMER** Proceed only at your own risk and knowledge level... best to have a professional fix it..Now, how I fixed mine... do NOT try and force the slide BACK as it is now stuck on metal vs plastic inside. I took a rubber or plastic mallet and tapped on the BACK PLATE, forcing the slide forward and it eventually came off. I hope this helps other 5.7mm owners out there.
