Question M&P 5.7 issues

Anyone having issues with the new M&P 5.7 ? Any extraction issues? Any gunning up in the chamber from the coated 5.7 ammo? Looking for any feedback. Pros and Cons, good and bad. Thanks!

There is a coating on all 5.7x28mm ammo sold. It’s not a laquer but something on the brass to make it slick. I’m getting a few stuck cases.

I have 500 rounds through my M&P5.7 TS (13347), 400 reloads and 100 factory, and have only experienced one failure to fire, and that was the primer.
When brand new the magazines were difficult to fill (glad they included the load tool!) but it has fed and functioned flawlessly.

How difficult is the 57 to clean? It looks like the barrel gas rings would be a bit of a pain.

Just got my 5.7 and both the magazines will only accept 16 cartridges of the Federal American Eagle 5.7x28MM FMJ 40GR with if adding additional cartridges causing a jam in the magazine.
Haven't been to the range yet to shoot it, but will post results tomorrow.

They do need to be broken in. Fill them up and fire them off, the issue will go away quickly.

I'm interested in the 5.7 and just curious. Do you coat your reloads?

I used to but it never worked consistently and reliably.
The first 200 through the M&P were my old attempted coating repairs but since then I have tried to remove as much of the coating as possible and they still feed and cycle flawlessly. Looking forward to bright and shiny 5.7 casings.

I'm also surprised how clean the pistol stays. The vast majority of the carbon is in front of the four gas rings near the muzzle with a little bleed over into the space between the gas rings and the three rear supports/gas rings. The rest of the pistol is virtually spotless even after 200 rounds.

Well, I went to the range yesterday and shot six full magazines. The first two separate magazines did have a FTF after the first of 22 rounds was shot. Had to drop the mag, clear the FTF round, tap the mag to bring the rest of the rounds to the top of the mag, reload and continue to shoot. The second of two separate of the same magazines had the same issue. The third of two separate of the same magazines work fine with no FTF. I don't understand why S&W would manufacture a firearm that you would have to run 88 rounds of ammo to just break-in magazines. That's just really undesirable IMHO to have to spend an extra $50 to have a new firearm function properly.

I had issues with my new mags for my equalizer and heard a lot of complaints about the same with new Smith mags. It took me at least 50 times for my mags to loosen up. But never had any loading or firing issues with them but reading others have.

You could just load and unload the magazines by hand a few times to loosen them up.

Is the 5.7 round any more or less dangerous to rechamber multiple times compared to other pistol rounds? I know that's not how you should feed ammo through the mags, but I'm just curious. Does the necked cartridge keep the bullet from being seated further into the case or does the high pressure make even the slightest additional seating dangerous?

On the Federal American Eagle (AE5728A) ammo, I chambered the same round three times from the magazine by using the slide release to load the round in the chamber. On the third chambering, the bullet came loose and fell out of the cartridge. So, it's basically not a good idea to chamber the same round more than once from the magazine by using the slide release to load the round in the chamber. If you want a round chambered and a full magazine installed (22+1), drop a round in the chamber first, close the slide by hand into battery and install the full magazine. That way there is no inertia on the chambered round to make the bullet move forward in the cartridge.

Tried that multiple times before going to the range and made absolutely no difference in freeing/loosening up the following rounds in a fully loaded (22 rounds) magazine. The only thing that worked was what I stated in my earlier thread.

The factory 5.7 coating is like a clear primer sealant. It can be at times difficult to manually remove via tumbling/media abrasives so the best advice to those that want to reload is to wash the brass in simple green and water for 10 minutes and call it good. If you use good dies that don't scrape the coating off (Lyman or the C4HD), the coating will generally outlast the primer pockets.

Some are saying the S&W action doesn't need the coating, but no definitive answers for downrange round count. If you're getting any stuck cases in the chamber, take a 9mm/40SW bore brush and CARB cleaner to clean out the M&P's 57 chamber.

Is anyone getting brass cartridge striking marks above the extractor on the slide surface? Got back from the range yesterday after shooting a couple of hundred rounds and had many brass hits from the ejection of the cartridge on the slide right above the extractor. Was shooting both Speer Gold Dot and Federal SS197SR.

Yup, noticed this after about 100rd of American Eagle this week.

This is what I've done so the finish isn't damaged from any more ejected cartridge hits on the slide. I carefully trimmed and fitted helicopter tape in the area where this was occurring. I've done this on many firearms where there are areas of high abuse to the finish from normal use. Helicopter tape is very resistant to abuse and adheres strongly to the firearm once all oils have been removed where it is applied.

With extra mags ordered, as well as a Hogue 17000 grip in case I may need it, I dove into a new M&P 5.7 w/ TS from here on base. Also picked up a new HS507K and a TLR-9 to add on, and some boxes of Federal and FN ammo (...ouch). Thinking about purchasing a .22 specific suppressor, but e-forms are now taking just as long as paper forms these days. Going to try out some holsters and chest rigs even though this'll mainly be a range and field shooter (sparingly for now, of course...). I'd like to have a green luminescent dot in the front and a blacked-out rear for BUIS, but this set-up should suffice once the optic is properly co-witnessed with the white dots. I've got the two original mags sitting filled with 22rds each for a full week before I hit the range to see this thing in action for myself.

I am using a kydex WD Tactical left hand holster for my 57. Found it on eBay and it works great.
