Traded my FN 5.7 MKIII for a new S&W 5.7 today. This one fits my hand sooooo much better than the FN.

I've watched and read-up on the gas delayed recoil system of the gun. When you view the barrel/shroud, tell me if this seems workable?

If I have a good smith cut off the shroud and barrel, right at the base of the muzzle cap threading, you think it will still work? Does it look like the gas bleeds-off before that juncture?

S&W so far has indicated they have no intention of such a 'normal' barrel configuration. Thanks

I wouldn't want to be the first to try this. The slip-fit of the barrel muzzle in the shroud ahead of the gas port appears to be how the system directs gas to the rear, cycling the action. What you propose would greatly reduce the length of this slip-fit. The slip-fit is only .75" long as it is. I think it would render your pistol inoperative.

How about just taking a file and filing down the threads then you don't have to cut anything. Also once thread is completely filed down its no longer a threaded barrel

MR, my reason for the question is that I want the pistol with a 'normal' barrel. Flush-fit, with the end of the slide, fully protected while in a holster.

You should have bought the Ruger 5.7 if you want a flush fit barrel.

Or the PSA Rock perhaps, though I think a lot of people are attracted to the gas system but don't want to be stuck with barrel sticking out.

I have owned two Ruger 57s and now own two S&W 5.7s. In my opinion, the S&W has a better trigger and even less recoil than the Ruger. In addition, the Rugers had a sharp corner on the trigger which, I think, could not be eliminated without compromising function. The S&W does not have this problem.
I, too, would like the S&W better without the threaded shroud and intended to modify the barrel and shroud myself.
However, I find that the barrel and shroud are hardened to the point that a sharp file just slides across the surface and doesn't cut. Some very careful grinding would be needed to remove the threads or to shorten the shroud and barrel.
Suggestions for a gunsmith who would be willing to do this work would be gratefully accepted.
