What is your opinion regarding incompatibility of M&P9 mags in steel frame M&P's? Purchased a new Competitor and came to realize my drawer full of 9mm mags are confined for use in previous versions only.

Watch the video below and it may help you and your problem . I does seem the metal frame can run different size mag wells or remove it and run your old mags !! I will carry a 5" PC 2.0 m&p poly frame 40sw but would never CC with a mag well .

Really nothing new here. The use of magazines/magazine base plates with firearms with mag wells has always been iffy, regardless of the firearm manufacturer. This exact same thing happened a few years back with Sig's P320 series. Sig's model with the mag well had rounded base plates on it's magazines to fit the magwell, but most other Sig magazines had squared corners and wouldn't work.

In the case of the Competitor, it was supposedly designed with using it for competition shooting, so naturally a mag well is part of the package. Unfortunately that just opens up the probability that all magazines with base plates not specifically designed for use in that pistol are not going to work.

About the only solution is to remove the mag well, modify the base plate so that it does fit, replace the mag base with one that will fit, or install a bigger aftermarket mag well that will accommodate the larger base plates.

You just need to get new base pads. Not necessarily for all your mags, just enough for the number of mags you need for the Competitor. Those mags will still work in the other M&Ps.

As noted above, this is a common thing when adding a magwell regardless of brand.

You can get ones that extend capacity to what ever limit you want (or allowed by rules if you compete).

Or, take the magwell off.
