New 5.7 Today

Got the result back today. I can't wring it out just yet, but will update it later.
Suffice to say, they said they fired 5 before the chop, and 5 afterward. Those 5 functioned. Now, I have to see if will still group, or will it pattern, LOL.

So far, it now fits nicely into an IWB leather rig for the G17, and one of my kydex rigs for the G17.

Well, there's a skeletal image of the assembly inside the manual. It looked pretty clear to me that the gas port was behind the shoulder at the base of the threads. The clerk took the manual and gun back into the shop to talk to their techs. He returned and said that they could certainly do so, but could not guarantee the function. I said that I understood the risk, and signed the ticket, LOL.

I am not familiar with the 5.7 and the operation of that gun. Was shorting the barrel the only thing that was done? What is the purpose of the gas port? Act as a Compensator?

It is much better looking with the nub gone!

BSA, there are some YouTubes about it that can tell a bit more. The way it recoils is controlled by bleeding off propellant gas. The gas leaves the barrel port, but has room to expand out into the interior of the shroud. Eventually, the pressure forces things backwards, rotating and unlocking the barrel and forcing the slide backwards. It does not 'tilt' in any way like our conventional, centerfire pistols. Hence, virtually no muzzle rize, nor recoil sensation.

The THICK part of what you see at the muzzle is the end of the shroud. It's a lip, much like when you open a coffee can, and there's an inner lip that's folded over. The wee little pencil-THIN tube is the actual barrel. The gas port is behind the crown, and the lip of the shroud.

Well, I had put this on the back-burner until our heat let-up. That's only so that I could get it outside for a chrony. Literally, I have the little red Chrony, LOL.

I had to get the thing like 5-feet in front of the muzzle to get it to register. That was with both the Smith and the PSA for comparo. I only fired about 5-shots each. The Smith brought low to mid 1500's and the rock mid-to highs 1500's with FN's blue-tip 40 gr. Since the pistols were nearly comparable, I felt as though I was getting honest readings. I just didn't have time to find a 'sweet spot' where I could possibly get the Chrony closer to the muzzle.

I've only put a few mags through the Smith, of the FN blue-tip. That's not much, but it hasn't bobbled. I'm fairly certain that nose-job didn't affect the recoil system of the design. It's most definitely the softest shooting of the Affordable-Three, Ruger, PSA and Smith.

VictorLouis - I read with interest your posts about shortening the barrel and shroud on your 5.7 pistol. I, too, am interested in this modification. I managed to find a new slide complete with barrel and shroud with the intent of shortening it as you have done. However, I find that both barrel and shroud are hardeded steel and can't be cut in the usual manner. I am pretty handy with cutting tools and intended to do this myself but have doubts about my getting it right by grinding.
Would you share the name and contact information of the gunsmith you had do the work on your 5.7? I train weekly with my 5.7 and would like to be able to holster it without the end of the barrel/shround sticking out.

I can only speak for myself, but I like the 5.7 for it's very light recoil. I have moderate to severe arthritis in both hands and even a 9mm causes me enduring pain. The 5.7 eliminates that and enables me to shoot an effective caliber on a regular basis.

You can use Caswell Stainless blackener. It may turn it black or slightly black. Better than Oxpho/Cold Blue.

As for it looking better... it's all relative to the end-user! I prefer the threaded shroud so I can run a suppressor and it looks more bad-*****, same for my Glocks. Only reason I'd go unthreaded is for conceal carry on those.

I'll find and order it.

I have the gel version and find that if I mix my applicator with some water and dab the gel on the surface, I need to wipe it off very quickly. Don't leave it on as it can cause it to brown at least on some steel. If I go slow and apply, remove, apply, remove, etc it gets black. Sometimes certain stainless steels don't really take to the blackening and may just get gray or splotchy. But this gel worked far better than any other cold blue I've tried.
