Not sure you get much with a 4" compact. I have the 4.25". What good would it do dropping it .25? 3" might be something.

The compact also removes length from the grip dropping the capacity by 2 in the 9mm chambering. I can’t answer the OP’s question, but I did email S&W CS recently and asked the if there were any plans to offer the Metal with the thumb safety, which it seems is not currently in the plans.

Shorter grip which is a bit easier to conceal.

I have yet to find a reason to buy the Metal frame models for the added weight and cost especially with the 4.25 model so why bother with a compact model designed as a carry handgun over the poly frame 2.0 models .

Okay first, what gun guy (um person) needs a reason. Second, it is only a little heavier. I have the metal and love it. Slapped a Vortex Venom on it and use it for work. On the weekend I use the CSX for easier carry. I have carried many M&Ps. Full and compact 40, 5"FDE, and now the metal. Okay we a few anyway. I, personally, am glad that they are going back to metal.

A little heavier and costlier for nut'n special for accuracy .
Bit s&w would not have made it if not for sig p320 alloy frame and walther's steel frame versions .

Perhaps s&w should work on quality control with any number of problems with other handguns in there line up . But hey it is your right to spend your dollars how ever you wish ! ha

Oh I not against metal as mt primary carry an alloy framed 4.25 1911 in 45 but its lighter than the 4.25 metal 9mm but so is my 2.0 PC 5" 40sw .

I need a reason to buy a new handgun. But when I started shooting handguns with steel frames when 6 years old , A colt hunstman ! First handgun was a steel frame 1911 back in '76 and my first CC handgun was a colt officers acp in '86 but quickly bought in to alloy frame versions then poly frame handguns when they became proven reliable .

Others have proven the metal is more about hype / advertising than real results .
Mark says hes shoot his metal better than his polymer - I would not expect him to answer differently since he spent good money buying the metal . hehehe

Because plastic has no soul..

I have had the LE 4.25 metal frame since the first of the year. It is nice, feels good in the hand. Even though Smith says it's the exact same dimensions as the polymer one, it is a tight fit in all but my duty holster. 3 off duty holsters and it is a chore to get it out.

It is not going to do anything all that much better than the polymer one, but I still like it.

No clue on OP's question about the compact. I would much rather have a compact than the full size. There really is no downside. That 1/4 inch of barrel is not going to make or break a shot.

Well I just asked question and got opinions.

We all know what opinions are like.

markmiela There as useful as some guys questions on a forum .
Take it up with s&w and maybe it will happen one day .

ethang I got a deal on a 4" compact in 9mm , my only 9mm I may carry one day but I still carry the larger version in 40sw for 11 to 12 years .

Can't argue with that logic. I carried a 40 cal for almost 12 years before we switched out to 9mm.

I started carrying a 40sw in '90 or maybe '91 with a firestar M40 and had a colt officers acp in'86 and kept it for a couple years after the firestar came along but sold it to a buddy that was a deputy and wanted it as a back up and off duty carry . I picked up my first lw commander in 45 after the sale. Started shooting a colt huntsman at 6 years of age and still enjoy it .

I can see you owning or wanting a s&w 5903 or 5904 for your so called handgun " soul " but remember "SOUL" is only a spiritual principle in person not an object but some shooters get these odd head games they play with and I guess it takes all kinds so have fun with your alloy framed m&p .

Now if you really want your metal to be a serious shooter look into apex gun smith fit barrel that's really not hard to fit . Then you might have a pistol that can shoot 1" maybe a bit lease or more at 25 yard groups . My wife has an early production m&p core 4.25 that is one of those serious shooters at least with an optic for us old folks .
