Imagine designing the best thumb safety on modern striker fired handguns and refusing to use it on the M&P Metal line.

Shame S&W, a dang shame.

Just one more head scratcher firearm from S&W for some of us but for sure the m&p metal fan boys will be soooo excited !

To bad it did not have a thumb safety option .

This Not Legal for Carry Optic Division do to the comp . Its not a good carry choice do to the comp ether or a HD handgun because of the comp again but I guess they can remove it and add a suppressor maybe !

But the fan boys of the metal line may love it

I have not shot the m&p metal line at all yet, but I find not every gun has to have a purpose. Some guns are just for range fun and as long as the market supports it, it doesn't need any other purpose. This is one of those guns. Probably a hoot at the range, especially with some hot loads.

Hell, most of the guns I own, I bought without any real purpose. There are those few that i bought as EDC or home defense, but most of them are just for range fun. If I stuck to just what I needed for my intended purposes, I would be much richer today, but much less happy. Money doesn't make me smile, having fun at the range does. And this thing looks like it would be a blast.

I totally agree, I just think a more durable coating should have been chosen.

I guess that I am one of those Metal "Fan boys." I am kinda torn. I like it but, the comp makes it a little long. As I stated above, I wish they would make the comp internal instead of the external comp. I have the 4.5" metal and love it. So does my wife, She wants to use it for CCW but, feels that it is a little too large. I am getting her an IWB holster for her to see if she will be comfortable.

Got nothing against the "Plastic" M&Ps. I have them and love them too but, there is something about the new Metal M&P. I can appreciate the 23 round mags but, feel it may be overkill for everything but, competition shooting. I would love to see S&W make a Spec gun in a compact metal frame like the Bull Shark.

I kinda like the direction they are going. Let's face it, everyone has different tastes and like different color frames as well as the plastic vs metal. They are just trying to keep the sales going. I have a feeling that they will not last long on the shelf.

IMO keep on rockin it S&W, love what you are doing.

Just sayn

I would say I'm more like a nerdy shooter and firearms collector with weird taste. Many guns I buy just because I want a gun in a new caliber and something chambered in that caliber catches my eye, or I will buy something because it's a different type of action that I dont have. I have guns in almost every action type now, and I have 15 or 16 different calibers, but only 22 guns. I only regularly carry one, and only have one set up for home defense, though I have a few more that I could and plan on carrying at some point. About 3/4 of what I own has no real purpose, at least for now. I will eventually get out and go hunting and I have guns to hunt anything north America can throw at me. Only thing I dont have anything for is long distance shooting(500yards+). I just like trying and learning new things.

Back on topic though, for the price, I would not buy this gun solely for the fact that it is a 9mm and if I'm going to buy another 9mm I have some other ideas for what I would want.

Same here, I have no interest in this one, but I'm not going to belittle anyone who shows an interest in it. Especially if it brings new shooters into the firearms community it's a win win right there.

Yes I agree let's keep this thread on topic because there seems to be a particular member here who likes to derail these threads allot lately. Not sure what happened to him because I used to like some of his post here. It's like he's gone into this alternate reality where everyone should only buy what he buys and do with it what he does.

I am to blame also because I just can't help myself with my rebuttals so I guess I'm just as guilty in this too.

To the original poster I apologize for being a part of the derailment of this thread, I stated my opinion, and I'm going to bow out of this thread because I have nothing more to say.

To anyone who purchases this, I hope you enjoy it and have a "BLAST" with it.

Not to water down this thread too much but, as I was reading the other posts, this brought to mind what car makers do with some of their more popular vehicles. Look at the F150, you have the regular truck, and many models up to the Platinum. You also have the Harley edition, Tremor, Raptor, and who knows what else. Why shouldn't S&W do the same to generate interest. This new OD green appeals to me but, not quite enough to get it. Someone else will because they like it and want it.

I don't want a Harley M&P Metal but, I am sure that there are some HD fans that would snap it up. Personally I hope that S&W keeps on going with these one off "SPEC" models.

I think it all boils down to manufacturers looking for new and innovative ways to sell their product.
When S&W came out with their new 2.0 Metal, how long does anyone think they could sell that product if it remained unchanged? I think it's safe to say not long.
Customers are always looking for something new, something different and like it or not, this new version is that. Some will like it, some will not, but it will appeal to some who want something new. It does offer a few new features such as color, the Faxon compensator, four magazines so it is an appealing product. It seems to be a similar sales campaign like Sig did with its Legion line which has been a big success.
Offering different versions keeps a design fresh and creates more new sales rather than becoming stagnant and losing sales. More sales helps a manufacturer get back development costs of new products which also helps to finance more new items and to keep the doors open.
I don't think I'm going to rush out and buy one but I'm glad that S&W came out with it. It will sell and that keeps S&W profits in the black so that they can come out with something new at a later date that I will want to buy.

It would be far better if s&w could manage to build properly fit and tested firearms and stop beta testing new , updated or current long term model's . Profits over quality control do seem to be the current way of producing firearms at s&w today .

Would have made sense if Smith shipped the Competitor with the 23 rd mags.
Like the majority of shooters, I have some guns for non serious use also.
I guess these “tactical” guys only buy practical objects their whole lives, for every use. More power to them, but I choose to live a more care free life.
You should see how many hammers I own….lol.

As to the gun, I like it, but Lose the knife and coin in my opinion.

The newer M&P trigger, compensated, and in the all metal frame, not bad. I'd like to run it side-by-side with the all-metal Canik.

While I can't deny the Canik's trigger is better, the S&W's engineering, especially that goes into recoil management, is usually superior. And with the heavy metal compensator, the new Spec should have minimal recoil.

Images - Metal M&P's, including the new spec on top, sandwiched around the Canik SFX Rival-S", and M&P 2.0 Competitor on the bottom:

Now if price is a big issue, the Canik would win if thats your main concern.

In my experience barrell-mounted comps are MUCH more effective than frame-cut compensators (if I am understanding your proposal correctly rrdcrly),The problem with using the the frame as the compnis:

The gasses have already expanded inside the slide before they're forced out the vents/cuts, so the gas exiting has much less velocity. This justice compensational force to counter-act muzzle-rise - though as a muzzle "brake" it does still work to reduce rearward travel by slowing the gasses (muchnlike suppressors reduce reocil), but not as much as a traditional compensator or muzzle brake*. But do to aforementioned problem with the gas expanding before exiting (and thus slowing) it's much less capable of compensatong for muzzle flip (with the bore being above the grip, compensation will almost always be.more effective than braking - although alm compensator act as brakes as well as comps)

*Tangent rearding physics of muzzle braking, in regards to muzzle flip: I understand that muzzle rise is mostly the result of the rearward force of the firearm (on the axis of the bore + the axis of the slide) hitting into the hand. That rearward force hitting the hand, that doesbn't move backwards, is thus trnaslated into movement upward. The muzzle moves in the direction that your grip imparts the least force - thus obviously the muzzle rises because a human's grip on a handgun is weakest in imparting downward force to prevent upward movement. The human grip is good at stopping reward travel, creating a fulcrum/pivot-point where the gun moves upward, unless you professional level grip. Even with brakes, there is upward travel, so a compensator is going to provide the most stability for your sights typically

First off, I have to disagree on the quality. I have not had a problem with any S&W I have purchased, new or used. Some of my pistols have had thousands of rounds through them.

Second, you logic is well, illogical. You are claiming that they are sacrificing quality because they are making new variants. Doing one doesn't preclude the other. Not sure about you but, I can walk and chew gum. Pretty sure S&W can also. Kinda feeling a little hate from you on S&W.

Every gunmaker has had issues and recalls. If you want a perfect gun, spend $5k on a Korth, Nighthawk custom or something like that. If you want a great value on a great gun then buy a S&W or something like it.

It is simple, if you bought a base F150, you don't have to throw hate on someone that bought the Raptor and just because they make many models of the same vehicle doesn't mean that they screw them all up.

Just sayin.

If only they would make one of their new guns in their own cartridge. This especially would be fantastic in .40. I would not have to think twice about buying one then. Same goes for .45 and 10mm. The market for full size 9mm handguns is so oversaturated that it's hard to get one that stands out. This does, but I would much rather get another beretta 92 series or even a 59xx. The market for .40, .45, and 10mm is far from saturated(especially .40), so if they decided to make this in any of those calibers, a lot of us would be more interested. I like to see these new offerings from Smith and Wesson, but it would be nice if they would offer at least one of them in a caliber other than 9mm. Contrary to what they might think, there is a market for larger caliber handguns as well.

I keep hoping with the resurgence of the 10mm, that maybe 40 will make a comeback.

I can understand the 9 MM making the comeback that it has due to better bullet technology and I don't mind it happening at all, hell my preferred carry is 9MM anyways.

But it's been institutionally inbred in me to also prefer a larger caliber, just because I can.

Saw Paul Harrell do a pretty decent ballistic test and the 40 still came out ahead except for the 9mm+P 135 gr FlexLock Critical Duty which preformed identical.

Many times today its besta testers that have to deal with the issues found in new firearms or new models and find the fixes like with the 4" 10mm !! To many people are ready to buy as soon as something new is advertised . It is to easy to read of the problems with the firearms found on this forum but also on others maybe to a leaser degree currently .

Thanks for your entertaining reply .

Default New from S&W...2023 SPEC SERIES M&P 9 METAL M2.0

I posted how much I liked my M&P metal and was told I was stupid and polymer guns were better and the only reason I liked it was because how much it cost. I would buy this gun in a heartbeat and might when my LGS has one in stock.

Yes it is very unfortunate that sometimes the firearms community does attract some real childish mother ******s to it.

I say get it and enjoy the hell out of it!

Who cares what some random hand job on the Internet says anyways. Bless their childish little hearts.

Definitely update us here with what you think of it.

I'm sure the majority of grown ups here would definitely like to hear how you like it.

Some heads are also going to explode, but the fireworks will be amusing.

What I like about the Metal series is that with 17 rounds in a mag my 4.25” Metal only weighs 2 ounces heavier than the polymer. I have several Metal Sigs and the weight on those guns is a lot more than either of the Metal series.

It isn’t just Sig that are producing Metal guns I believe Walther just came out with the PDP so I applaud Smith for being able to make one as well.

Default New from S&W...2023 SPEC SERIES M&P 9 METAL M2.0

So I did indeed buy this pistol, shot it today at the range and it was very pleasent to shoot. The comp helps with muzzle rise and I was able to double tap steel at twelve yards. I would say that my AXG Legion has a little less muzzle rise probably because that gun is a heavy full size gun with a comp built into the slide.

Eventually this gun will have an Eotech Eflx on it as well.

I just grabbed a Competitor edition yesterday hope to get out on Saturday I already have about 150 handloads and a bag of 500 coming from Starline. I have to say I'm impressed with this gun the trigger is really good out of the box. I'm not crazy about the plastic so hope I can install some metal parts in the future depending on how they are holding up. I had a spare Delta Point Pro so I slapped it on there. Looking for some holster advice or recommendations if anyone has any. I have been looking at the gunfighters any good ?
