metroplex I learn to change how I hold the sights on a colt huntsman with those little black sights when I was 7 year old to adjust for bullet impact do to distance or ammo used. Now 67 years later I still use that ole "kentucky windage" and elevation for TARGET shooting in general and hunting over my younger years .
For defensive practice sight alinement matters far less and hitting center of mass at 40 yards is not hard to do at 15 yards where even a flash over my sights are not used to place rounds on 8" steels firing quickly . At 25 yards and under I can see my sights are centered or not in my peripheral vision and know I'm well centered on a vital area . As yardage increases I may hold a little higher on target and glance at my sights out 40 yards but defensive shooting is NOT target shooting .
Your sight issue can be adjusted if you feel you need to with a Dawson Precision front sight change to a black front sight or even add a fiber optic front sight .
I can tell you my compact 4" optic ready compact has a front sight of .310 and a rear of .345,, well plus or minus a couple thousandths .
I also have never used a sighting laser and never change sights do to where they impact . I carry a M&P 4.25 40sw or a commander in 45. They print differently but I know that so its not an issue .
I'll shoot a 5 shots at 25 yard group off a bench & handgun rest to see how it groups and where . I will adjust windage if needed
and to check bullet impact , check again with 3 rounds at 10 yards and 40 with the ammo I plan to carry in it and I know how to adjust as needed . Just don't pick a handgun based on where a laser points .
