Default M&P compact questions

Hey everyone. I went to the range today and got to shoot a few Glock 9mm, one was a g43 and I had a few issues with it running so I wasn’t impressed. The other was a Glock 19. I enjoyed the size and seemed to shoot it fairly well. I had a Glock 19 before but starting over I was considering another shield but now I’m thinking maybe getting a compact m&p. My questions are;

One- can you put a red dot optic on them?

Two are the compacts similar to the Glock 19 size wise?

1.) Yes, "Optics Ready" Models of the M&P 2.0 are available.

2.) The 2.0 Compact 4" Models are the same size as a G19, earlier 1.0 Compact Models are closer in size to the subcompact G26.

The 4 inch compact is as near identical in size to a G19 as you will find. They also have a subcompact w/ the 3.6in barrel. I have a 1.0 compact from when it was called compact w/ the 3.6 barrel. My wife has a 2.0 compact w/ 5 inch barrel. I have gotten to where I carry mine w/ a 15 rnd mag w/ a spacer. SO the grip is the same as a 2.0 but still has a slightly barrel. I like the 2.0 a bit better but not enough to bother selling mine or trading up.

As an owner of both and a more active member on GlockTalk forum then here, S&W M&P > Glock. Get the M&P. Many guys over on GlockTalk are fond of them too.

There are two M&P 2.0 Compact sizes. One is a 3.6" and the other is a 4" barrel the same size as the G19. Many like the 3.6" more, and you're not really losing a relative or noticeable amount of velocity or performance. I own the 4" M&P 2.0. The 3.6" wasn't out at the time. Yes, they can be had with the factory optic cut.

M&P 2.0 3.6" Compact [same capacity with 0.4" shorter barrel] vs Glock 19.

M&P 2.0 4" Compact vs Glock 19.

I had a. 2.0 compact but sold to buy a 2.0 subcompact, why? More flexibility.

I can cary 17,15 or 12 round mags, and I found compact 10 and 12 cheap

S&W M&P M2.0 9mm Compact 4" barrel, optic ready, no thumb safety is SKU: 13563

Same thing with thumb safety is SKU: 13568

Avoid SKU: 13143 or SKU: 13144 which are the same thing but with the old hinged trigger.

Smith and Wesson's website (https://www.smith-wesson.com/) is pretty easy to navigate allowing you to see the current options available and the SKU that goes with it. I try to note the SKU of the exact model when shopping for new items. This just makes sure there is no miscommunication or detail lost during the shopping/ordering process.

Also, double check the SKU's I provided. I'm pretty sure they're right but according to my wife I rarely am.

FYI: Nothing is wrong with the hinge trigger. I have owned multiple M&Ps for over a decade with the hinge trigger, the APEX trigger, and the newer Glock cone trigger. They all are good duty and self-defense triggers that shouldn't hinder any competent shooter. It's all a matter of personal preference and what you can get the best deal on. There's no reason to "aviod" the hinge trigger as it works, is dependable, and has been vetted for almost 20 years now.

Thanks everyone for the great information. I have been torn between an m&p shield plus or the m&p compact or subcompact. I am leaning towards the compact over the subcompact due to not seeing a NY state complaint model but the compact is

I have the full size M&P 2.0, the 2.0 Compact, the 3.6 Compact, and the 2.0 subcompact. I didn’t think there would be enough of a difference to matter between the 4” Compact and the 3.6” Compact, but the 3.6 version feels better and points better for me, while still having the same capacity as the standard Compact.

I like'em all......

The 2.0 Compact with 3.6" bbl is my carry pistol, as is the Shield 2.0/Plus and .380 Bodyguard. As far as the hinged trigger v the newer flat trigger goes, I have no issues with either of them. I like them both equally as well. So don't let trigger style be a deciding factor for you.

Recently bought an M2.0 Compact 4" OR

A. Top of the slides are narrower than optic base (Holosun C)

B. Really tall sites for co-witness

1. Using 10rd magazines can be an issue (I cannot load the 10th round)

(and if I could, the mag will not lock while the slide is closed)

2. Gritty trigger is actually from striker block plunger

3. aggressive palmswells > I bought Talon grips

4. Surprisingly heavy 4" slide

5. horizontal firing movement > a youtube shows how the gun moves ever so slightly horizontally

Can you post a link to this or explain what you mean?

I haven't noticed any problem with my 2.0 OR compact, the bullets match my point of aim with the iron sights. But my Shield Plus shoots a little to the left. I have been assuming that is me so I haven't drifted the sights. My other small 9mms, a Glock 43 and Sig 365 don't shoot to the left so I don't think I am flinching.

A point about the optic. The optic is gonna add height. I had a slide milled for the RMR and it sits way lower than the factory system with a plate and uses fairly normal suppressor sights. I mention this because the added height made concealment a problem.

It'd be nice if the makers of "optic ready" guns included a set of sights that worked with optics. Not installed, just in the box. What complicates this is the lack of a uniform deck height on optics. I was advised the Delta Points needed skyscraper sights.

The M&P 2.0 with the 4 inch barrel is similar to the Glock 19 but a bit heavier. Shoots very well. The shield plus is very nice to carry and is optic ready. These guns are very accurate for being a small lightweight size, and gives you a variety of mags to carry. 10,13 and 15. I carry the 13 with 15 as a backup. Another to consider is the equalizer. It is a little heavier than the shield plus and is optic ready, uses the same mags as the shield and is really accurate. One of my best shooting guns of any size. It has the easy rack slide and on this gun I really like the thumb safety. It’s easy to use and I don’t usually like safeties. The shield safety is so small, I don’t even use it for fear of not being able to take it off safe in a defense situation.

I can confirm what OldLefty stated about the slide shifting slightly during trigger break. All of my M&Ps have a little slop that allows the slide to move side to side near the muzzle. To check this (obliviously with an unloaded gun), hold the dust cover/frame and then see if you can push the slide to the left of right in relation to the dust cover. Everyone of my M&Ps will move left to right to some degree. The side to side movement on my 1.0 shield is almost unnoticeable, Full size 1.0 moves a little more, 3.6 compact 2.0 (purchased in 2018) moves a little more and 3.6 compact 2.0 (purchased in 2020) has the most slop.

Both 3.6 compacts are milled for RMRs. I didn't notice slop in the pistols until I mounted the RMR on the second compact. When dry-firing, the dot would jump slightly to the left at trigger break. I thought "oh hell, when did I develop a flinch?". I then braced the pistol on a sandbag and dry-fired again, same result. I got out my first compact and dry-fired it while sandbagged and sure enough, the dot jumped left on trigger break although, just barely. So, I looked at the relationship of the slide to the dust cover, near the muzzle, while I pulled the trigger and sure enough, the slide shifted slightly to the left on trigger break. That explained why the dot what moving during dryfire. Although initially frustrating, I found that it doesn't affect the accuracy of either pistol. I've been shooting handguns long enough that I know I don't have a flinch at trigger break but a newer shooter, using a red dot on an M&P, might get frustrated trying to eliminate their "flinch" when it could actually just be the slop of the gun. I probably would have never noticed this if I had only been using the iron sights.

Also of note, I cannot induce this side to side slop on my son's Glock 19 or my brother-in-laws Springfield XDS.

I hope this helps.

If you buy one of these in New York or have a New York shop order one for you it will come with compliant 10 round magazines so you should be able to get whichever one you really want.

Most shops can also modify the magazines for you and permanently block them to 10 rounds.

Thanks everyone. I have been looking over everything and I think I am sold on a shield 2.0. I already have an extra magazine and holster and ameriglo sights from when I had a shield back in my home state. I like the plus but I don't see much difference other than a 10 round magazine and a thicker grip. If I didn't have other things for a shield I wouldn't even consider the 2.0 version and go with the plus.

I like the looks of the equalizer but price point wise from what I can tell its cheaper to go with a shield and get about the same performance.
