Default A few "newbie" questions M&P 2.0 45acp..police marked

Not sure I really want to dive into M&P's other than the 2.0 Compact I have in 9mm for EDC, but making the rounds the other day I happened onto a M&P 2.0 in 45 ACP that was in a black plastic case with S&W labels matching the serial number and the case had all the goodies (2 extra mags, all docs, manual, padlock, 3 grip attachments). The gun itself looked like never fired and was "engraved" (meaning laser printed, or some method with no carving required) on the slide "MASS STATE POLICE" and on top was a small state police badge/shield.

The serial number was NKPXXXX. The price is way too high for me ($569) so I left for home and tried to match up some stuff with SCSW 4th but found more questions than answers.

SCSW says these were made 2012-2015 (MA Compliant...10# trigger pull), and the description also shows 10SH for the 4-1/2" (this one), and 8SH for the 4" Compact (also MA compliant). What does the 10SH and 8SH abbreviation stand for?

The NPK serial number pre-fix. I can't find any reference to the 3 alpha combination..could be it was made after SCSW 4th went to press, but I couldn't find any Julian date, or other date code on the S&W label so just wondering if any of you have seen this combo?

This particular seller does NOT deal in any police trade-ins or buy backs and told me this one came from a private seller locally. OK....so any of you with LEO backgrounds, especially Massachussetts State Police, aware of being able to purchase your state issue piece? Could this be some sort of commemorative? I wonder how a Mass State Police gun ended up locally, but have seen others from PD's all over so no big deal, just wondering.

Do any of you know if Mass State Police actually bought a number of these 45 ACP pistols and actually put them in service? Seems like the rest of the world had already gone to 9 mm by 2012-2015.

Usually product number on the label means a lot and can be translated fairly easily but in this case the product number doesn't match anything in SCSW 4th, however the gun itself matches right up with extra mags, white dot sights, so again..just wondering.

I don't collect commemoratives but if this one may be a legitimate actual police issue I might make an offer just to see if he really wants to move it.

Thanks for any replies in advance...as always if I can't find it in SCSW4th.........the answers are always here with you folks.

Could be someone boought the fun from a surplus outfit and is trying to resell it. To me, that would just be a used gun, and the price is too high. Sorry, can’t help with the markings.

I'm sure more people in the know will come along shortly, but yes, the Mass staties' did carry the M&P 45 for a while. They originally had the M1.0 and then were going to the M2.0 (pictured) and decided to pivot and go in a different direction a few years ago (think they went P320 9mm). I bought one of those Mass M2.0's about 2 years ago, unissued, case, 3 mags, for $489. A few months ago I bought one of the Mass M1.0's that were turned in (no case, 2 mags, $329). I emailed Smith and they said my M1.0 was made in 2010.

10sh and 8sh refers to 8 round or 10 round mags. The 1.0 45s were available shorter grip(8 round) or longer grip (10 round)
