So I picked her up the other day for $1500 (didn't even think to use my .mil to order one, but i still paid less than MSRP in this crazy market). From the shop I bought her (Shooter's Supply, Louisville, KY) I also picked up the Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50mm. I happened to have a buddy who was ETSing and headed back to Cali, so I traded him the stock 10rd mag for one of his .308 Pmags. Yesterday I was able to get some DPMS 20rd mags (I overpaid, but they're the first mags for this rifle I've even seen on shelves lately). I also got in yesterday (from Amazon) the GDT Rapid transition backup irons you see on the rifle. Going to the range Thursday to dial the scope and backup irons in.

Payday I will be ordering a low profile gas block and a free float tube, or quad rail. Just having trouble deciding which one to throw on there. Leaning towards a DD .750 clamp on gas block, and the Troy floated quad rail, but nothing is set in stone yet. She also needs a BCM Gunfighter 7.62 Large latched charging handle, and a different grip... either MIAD or BCM, havnt decided. Open to suggestions for other mods. My plan for it is something similar to a SASS/DMR, to learn to shoot 500+ meters on as I don't have a whole lot of long range experience, and using it for hunting next season. Ill post a range report and results after I get it dialed in.

Anyways, heres the pics!

Alright so I've gotten some rounds through it, zeroed the scope and buis at 100m last Thursday with good results. I zeroed with 175gr federal mil surp bthp, took me around 20 shots to get comfortable wth it, and grouping good. Shot just under 1moa warm bore. I then shot some 168gr sierra match and it impacted about 2" higher, but around .75moa. I then shot out to ~340yrds and used the scopes first bar downwhich is 1.5 moa down from center and was impactng a 6" paper plate every shot.

I picked up some cheap magtech 150gr ammo and shot it out to around 270 yds today at an uncles place, and it absolutely did not like the magtech ammo. It shortstroked every shot, would eject, but not pus the bolt carrier far enough back to strip the next round from the magazine. So I emptied the mag and started hand feesing em one round at a time and it shot ok. Was shooting a little higher than my zero, but expected that.

All in all I've been really happy with the performance given the 18" lightweight barrel. I ordered the troy free float rail, yhm .750 gas block, vtac padded sling, , bcm gunfighter 7.62 with large latch, and some rail coveres last night. Will post new pics once I get it all installed.

Edit: so after some research it seems some of the dpms 20rd mags had issues, gonna grab a dremel tomorrow and give the mags a shave, see if that solves the problem.

Got the gas block, sling, charging handle and rail covers. Waiting on the rail still.

In the meantime I bought a new dremel and went to work on the magazines. Shaved just over 1/16" off the front, and rounded the front lip of the magazine, adding a bit of a ramp to it to allow the rounds to load forward better. The rounds were also hitting on the front tabs, so I rounded those too. After loading the mags and cycling the bolt, i got them to feed well. Hopefully this solves my problem.

On to the BCM Charging handle... So it's supposed to fit... it turns out the way the charging handle fit with the gas key on the bolt carrier, and the gas tube itself didnt quite line up properly. I took the dremel with a rounded grind bit and ground down some of the inside of the charging handle to get it to fit better. Once I got it good, I hit it with a sanding, then polishing bit. Its ugly looking but it cycles the bolt properly now.

Im terrible about taking pics while working on this stuff... will post pics in a little while. Also, I took the flashhider off, and removed the stock gas block. In order to get the gas block off the front, I had to cut the washer at the muzzle. I put a small cut in it and spread it just enough so it would slip over the threads on the end of the barrel. Its still useable, too.

Gas block test fit:

Awesome picture of my floor, i mean, the washer.

Another update. Finally got the Troy rail I wanted, and got it installed. Installation was a pain in the ***, but we got lucky and didn't have to take the barrel nut off. Wound up cutting off the Delta ring and slip ring with a grinder, and then mounting the troy rail to the stock barrel nut, which it fits. Bazinga.

Pics are attatched. All thats left is a Harris bipod setup, and maybe a paint job. Havn't decided yet.

What do ya'll think? Paint? No paint? I'm leaning towards rattle can paint job, tan base, sniper veil snakeskin camo.

Like the Quad Rail!

I like the quad rail! (I would paint yours just so everything matches) Going to go the same route with mine. Hey is there quad rail that is mid length, and will be the exact same height as the stock gas block?

Which exact Troy rail model did you get? I ask because I know I will have one of these in the future.

And I vote for no paint. Just use FDE accessories. But thats my preference. If ever the SHTF, then paint at will.

Quick question; What manufacture is the 1 o'clock off set sights and where did you grab them?

thanks

The irons are these:

GDT AR15 AR 15 Front and Rear 45 Degree Rapid Transition BUIS Backup Iron Sight:Amazon:Sports & Outdoors@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41CB19pGgmL.@@AMEPARAM@@41CB19pGgmL

Not anything high speed, but without dialing em in, just to see where I was at I was hitting a 6" group at 100m I have to rezero since I installed the rail anyways.

I can confirm this. I've been trying to fire CBC M80's and they are only 147 grain. Every shot shortstrokes.

I guess it depends on how well you paint!! Nice Quad rail though. Maybe need some more earth tone parts, its kind of funny looking with the earth tone quad rail and everything else black.

Has a Magpul ACS in fde now... need the thicker stock pad tho, the thin one sucks to shoot .308 :P

Did you have any problems with moving the slip ring? For some reason I can't get mine to budge!! Pushed down with all my weight (200+lbs) and it still wouldn't move
