Default Eotech on M&P 10?

I've decided the main use is going to be defensive at close ranges (never more than 100 yards), so I'm going to try an Eotech 512 on my new rifle. Been hemming and hawing long enough. I have a scoped M1A and various scoped AR's for longer range use, and several hunting rifles for target range use, so here I go! Should have it by next week.

Has anyone else tried one of these, or even an Aimpoint or other RD sight on their M&P 10?

My Eotech is designed for a .308 rifle like SAW's M&P 10.

It's the 552 XR308...w/ BDC (Ballistic Drop) Reticle.

. 100 yd
. 300 yd
. 600 yd
. 900 yd

FANTASTIC is the only word to describe it, and its not much different in price from the 512.

That XR552X308 is quite a nice setup, but a tad more than I wanted to spend on a CQ rifle. I'll never use NV, so I opted for a lesser cost which should still be OK for my needs. I guess someday I may want the 552, but for now I'm living within [or maybe just outside?] my budget. (chuckle)

AFA Aimpoint goes - it was pretty much a toss-up, except for the 1MOA vs 2MOA scenario. I guess I was looking for something a little different than a scope shaped red dot. I've had a couple of lesser quality ones on other weapons in the past, and the dot just 'didn't trip my trigger' so to speak. Nothing wrong with them - just not what I was looking for on this particular rifle right now.

Thanks for the input guys - I appreciate the replies.

I'm about to put an EOTech on my AR. Primary Arms is selling them with a "free" PA 3x magnifier right now.

IMO, run a magnification with that Eotech, would be a waste to not put some type of magnified optic on it.

That's always an option later on for me - but for now I don't really need one. Danged magnifiers are as much as the sight too, at least for a good quality one, from what I've read. Any recommendations on magnifiers??

Just updating with some pics of the Eotech mounted, in case anyone is contemplating a similar addition. I think it looks great, and target/sight acquisition is pretty fast compared to one eye use scopes. I think I'm going to enjoy this rifle alot!

I have a 512 on my DPMS LR-308T.

Works just fine on the "big gun" --- until it doesn't.

You should know by now that the battery compartment of the 512 is a flawed design. The rubber bumper by the battery contacts is attached in the manner of a lousy sticker.

If you remove the batteries when the sight is not in use, the springs behind the battery contacts push forward against the rubber "sticker," causing the contact to become less secure, and in some cases, causing the rubber sticker to detach from the unit.

If you leave the batteries in place when the sight is not in use, the rubber sticker becomes compressed, and the batteries can move around in the compartment, especially during firing and recoil - which causes an open in the circuit - which causes the unit to shut off in the middle of a string of fire. Heavier recoiling guns are worse offenders.

Also, if you leave alkaline batteries - especially partially-discharged alkaline batteries in the sight, its a certainty that the batteries will eventually leak. Depending on when this leak is discovered, the sight may be completely destroyed, or at the very least, the battery contacts will be badly corroded. I had to repair one of my 512's because of battery leakage. It is some consolation that EOTECH will send you a "repair kit." The kit consists of a new pair of contacts, a pair of contact springs, and a new rubber sticker to hold the new contacts in place - at least as best as such a design will allow.

If you must run a 512 on your rifle, you can avoid the worst of this by throwing away all your alkaline batteries, and replacing them with the considerably-more-expensive lithium AA cells. I am unaware of lithium AA cells ever leaking in an EOTECH 512. I also seem to recall reading that lithium leaks don't corrode things in the same way that alkaline leaks always do.

If you still like the 512 well enough to keep it, I suggest that you get your hands on a repair kit NOW. Its not a question of whether you will need the kit. Its only a question of when. Brownells will sell you the kit, or you might be able to beg one from EOTECH if you ask nicely.
