M&P10 Grip
I am a fan of Ergo grips and would like to install one on an M&P10 that will be arriving mid-week. I noticed in the owners manual on the SW site that the M&P10 has two springs and detents that go into the grip unlike a regular AR15. Wondering if anyone has changed grips and if so, how so? I guess I could either shorten the takedown pin spring or drill a hole in the grip to house the spring.
Thanks for any info!

Did your Hogue grip have the second hole for the the takedown spring? I am just basing my question from the SW owners manual I found online. It looks like the supplied grip has two holes (1 for safety spring/1 for takedown spring) in the diagram.
Thanks

I put the ergo deluxe on mine. The stock grip has two holes but ironically one of them doesn't line up and therefore is not utilized anyway.
Ergo Deluxe is my favorite so far. No modifying of any part is necessary.

From what I understand this is a common AR10 design. The one spring is for the safety selector and the other for the rear takedown detent (from what I recall). Just don't lose either
I have the Larue A-PEG on mine and it seems to fit snugly as well

I have a Magpul MOE grip on mine - and I did replicate the second hole. If I remember it is 0.300" center to center (or edge to edge) of the selector spring hole and slightly outboard. I don't remember what size drill bit I used - use your grip to measure which drill bit fits best.
cheers

The original grip on my M&P 10 has the two holes, but the one for the takedown pin spring doesn't line up very well anyway. The spring had a kink in it when it was new. I had to loosen the grip because the ambidextrous safety lever was originally set up for left hand operation and when I loosened the grip to switch the lever around, I noticed the spring had a kink in it from being pinned between the lower and the grip. I got things somewhat lined up, when I replaced the grip, but the hole in the grip still seemed out of place.

I have big hands with long fingers and am partial to the Blackhawk Ergo grip.
It it easy to change, you just need two worry about loosing two screws vs. one.

Is there a consensus as to what to do with the take down pin spring? Drill a hole in the aftermarket grip? Or just make sure it gets compressed with the new grip? Thanks.

It compresses. I don't think you need a hole.

I liked the Houge Grips but than I found the Ergo Grips...
I really like them, I have one of the better ones ( with thumb rest ) for one of my AR's...
I just installed a regular one on my new M&P 10...
You don't need to worry about drilling an extra hole... Just run the grip up snug and than tighten up the screw...
If I remember correctly it's the same as the M&P 15-22, it just rests against the grip...

Which Magpul grip did you get and did you need the wedge?

I tried the magpul grips. the MOE+ fits but bad gap, the gapper doesn't work with it. Tried the MIAD grip, fit well, not as bad of a gap. Bought the gapper, it is not direct-fit. you have to cut it to fit right, a real PITA.
ERGO Deluxe was my final choice. You can use with a gapper, but I didn't get one and it is close enough to the receiver that I am good with it.

Just installed the Magpul MOE.
It went on without a hitch.
There is a little gap on the angled part but its not enough to worry about as far as I'm concerned.

Checking the reviews and the pics, I ordered 2 of these. One for the M&P 10 and one for my 5.56.
Now I am officially BROKE but looking forward to the upgrades!

I'm still a little confused here. I've heard that there is no need to drill any holes and also to do just that. Is it a straight swap? Do I need to watch for small parts/springs falling out? Any help is appreciated

Yes there are two springs that you might loose track of if you don't pay attention. You won't have any problems. Only things as far as parts flying or losing will be those two springs.
The grip I installed and that was recommended by Smith and Wesson in their M&P 10 Accessory Booklet, the AR15 scorpion recoil grip. Found here ATI | Gun Stocks | Forends | Rails | Advanced Technology International part # A.5.10.2347. That grip did not have the extra hole for the takedown spring. I just pushed the grip on like normal, taking care not to bend the springs and all went fine. The takedown pin was a bit harder to push since the spring was compressed a little more, but not too bad to bother me.

Got the Makos on with no problems thanks to the info here. The 5.56 fit like a glove but there is a small
Gap on the M&P 10 at the thumb forefinger area. I've heard mention here of a "gapper" to close that? I was thinking of a little heat applied judiciously may fix it also.

Yes. That would do it. (Heat Gun) Don't burn it... Might want to remove the grip first so you could over bend a touch, allowing room for spring back and a tighter fit.
