Default A2 front sight post mounted on MP-10

Hello everyone,

I have had the mp-10 for a few months now, took it out hunting, use it on the range a bunch, just a very good and fun rifle to shoot.

I use a Nikon M-308 on it with a larue QD mount. What i didn't really like was the back up iron sight options for it. I also want the mp-10 to be identical to the mp-15 for easy switching between the two with good muscle memory and familiarization.

So I decided to remove the front clamp on gas block and have my gun smith pin on a A2 front sight gas block (i have the magpul rear backup sights).

Most of you are probably thinking why not just do a flip up front sight since you wont really use it except if your optics fail then it wont be in your line of sight through your optic. Well due to the larue mount positioning and everything you actually dont see the front sight post in the optic when everything is mounted.

For me this is what i choose to do, we all have our own preferences, but I wanted to post this in case anyone has ever thought of doing this to their rifle as well. I am just waiting for my gun smith to finish it up, but after which i will post a picture of the finished worked.

Well after much work by my gunsmith we discovered that the barrel is machined in such away that it has about .477 inches too short of an area to properly pin an A2 front sight post.

Not too many other options to get an A2 sight block on there, other than a new barrel, machining the current barrel and putting some kind of sleeve on there so it can be properly pinned.

I really wanted to do this switch, so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

You could do a fixed front sight like a Daniel Defense or LMT on the railed gas block that comes on the rifle.

If you're dead set on a full front sight base, have a machine shop weld the one you have closed at the front. Then your smith can drill it out to the necessary diameter to match the barrel's taper. Leave the rear the 0.750 that it is. Then, have him taper pin it to the barrel. Shouldn't be that difficult.

John, I know that Armalite has a law enforcement (LE) model introduced this year with an A2 front site. See if you can get your hands on one of those. Barrel thickness being the same, it should fit snug. Obviously, you may need to look into that some more but it's an option

The dirty little secret is that while you may not see the front sight post when looking through the scope, you cannot fool physics. The post blocks the reticle and keeps the shooter from being able to precisely place the crosshairs on the target. I don't know how to explain the science behind the phenomena but I have observed the affects first hand. I mounted a varmint scope on an AR with a front sight base. I found myself frustrated trying to place the crosshairs on a small target as they kept slipping to one side or the other. Once I got an upper without an FSB, the problem went away

When I see a front sight post, I immediately think about how to get rid of it. To each his own. They drive me crazy when I look through a co-witness optic. I much prefer a free floating hand guard with a flip up front sight or no front sight at all. If I add a iron front sight to my M&P 10, it will be to the front sight block.

This works great and no pinning/welding needed.
