The way I look at it, I almost lost a deer one year because it was too close for a scope, all I saw was brown. I could have been aiming at it's head or it's butt. I had to look to the side move the rifle and then shoot. Not a good way to shoot. Since then, I either only use iron sights or have a provision to be able to use either or.
Once I get a scope on my M&P10, my iron sights will be mounted on a 45 degree offset so I can use them for the close up stuff and the scope to "reach out and say hello".
