M&P 15 ORC 5.56
My local shop has this rifle in stock for $799. I currently own a 15-22 that I like very much. I'd love to buy an M&P 15. Should I buy a 5.56 cal M&P 15 or wait for a 6.8 SPC version?

The 5.56 gives you many more ammo options including .223 rounds in many flavors. The 6.8 was developed as a combat round for SOCOM forces and while it is potentially more lethal it, IMHO, would not be practical as a round for range work due to it's limited choices in ammo and expense.

That's a bit high for an ORC, I've seen them around $ 600 on sale.
I have the same rifle, and they have a non collapsible stock, which I replaced for about $ 80

Where do you see these rifles for $600? Just wondering, I'm in the market for them and only see them for around 850.

ammo for 223/556 is much cheaper than 6.8 SPC. Why choose 6.8 SPC?
I have the M&P 15 ORC. It's a good AR. Not too fancy and good price to step into the AR world.

S&W has had miltiary discounts at times that get the price that low. IMHO anything between 8-900 is fair for a local shop. Life is too short to go too crazy about a "steal".
Seems the "Compliant" models of the OR version run a bit higher than the norm.

Yup. Currently, S&W is actually running a $100 rebate for military personnel. The M&P 15 ORC is eligible.
My local shop sell the M&P 15 ORC for $799. With rebate, it will be $699.

Is the non-collapsible stock a requirement if one lives in one of the assault rifle ban states?
My ORC came with a standard stock that was adjustable.

yes, Ma. = non adj. stock. I own the ORC, great gun. $799.00 is a fair price, we get to support our LGD and being from Ma, we get to support S&W, our local gun manufacturer. Buying offline isn't always much of a savings once we pay shipping and FFL fees...
China... the wife loves her Mark III...

Gander Mountain had a sale, several months back, at about the $ 600 price.
I bought mine elsewhere, because I had a trade they wouldn't give me squat for.

I'm sure that had to be the sport model, not the ORC, which is the rifle this thread is about. Gander Mt. definitely would not be selling the ORC for that low of a price.

It WAS an OR model (this is not California), and that was the price.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't heard. I just bought a 15OR last week at $849 + tax. Now it's 749.

I am not in California either. The rifle being discussed in this thread is this, S&W M&P 15OR .223 Carbine 16" $839.00 SHIPS FREE
These rifles do not go for under $800, if you saw this rifle for $600, plus the $100 mil rebate that would have brought it to $500, and passed on it, then I feel very sorry for you. You should have bought 20 of them. The rifle you saw was the sport model, with no FA, dust cover, or chromed barrel.
Now I'm done posting in this thread, if you still can't grasp this, then I cant help you.

Well, Drop, can't help you. I certainly grasp what we are talking about.
The Sport was not available then. It WAS an OR Model. If you don't believe me, I really don't care.
The $ 600 included the Smith and Wesson rebate.

Yep, several others reported that or a very similar price in early 2011 and late 2010. TRUE!
