I know they are hard to find, but can anyone tell me if the rear sight is removable on the new entry level "sport" M&P 15?

Does it get in the way of using normal optics?

My LGS says it may be the end of the year before they can expect to be able to get one for me. The price looks right, $585 out the door.

Any thoughts.

It is removable, and it does get in the way. I will replace mine with a flip up site eventually.

Got lucky and found one at a local sporting goods store a few weeks ago.

The rear sight is a detachable, dual aperture with 6/3 marking on the elevation drum. Adjustable for windage and elevation. The top rail of the upper receiver is T marked. I replaced the rear sight with a carry handle, because I like the look. Popped right on and zeroed easily.

With the top rail, you should be able to mount any optic that you want.
