Default M&P15OR MOE help

Hey all, first post...

I've had my M&P15OR MOE for about a year now, haven't done much to it besides throwing on 2 troy industries sling adapters in the front and back, and tossing on a cheap red dot, ATN Ultra Sight to be exact.

I'm wanting to add some backup iron sights (flip up), but not sure what to use that will work with my gas block and won't take up too much room on the rails since I don't have much room to begin with.

Eventually, I'd like to get a better set of optics on the gun, but for the $60 I spent on the ATN, it's not that bad, and gives pretty decent results.

Is there a way I can add more pictany rails to the top of my MOE handgaurd? From what I read, the MOE handgaurd accepts more rails in the 2 10 and 6 o'clock position, nothing about the 12. If I could, that would be great.

I plan on adding some rails to the 2 and 10 positions for a surefire light and maybe a laser

Here's basically what I'm working with, sorry for the slightly weak picture, only one I have of it, plus you get to see some of my other collection.

Info. for the sights http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-w...ics-ready.html

For the rails Magpul MOE Handguards and rails

The gas block is obviously where the sight should go. The add on MOE rails are ok for hanging things NOT requiring precision alignment because the MOE handguard is not a steady platform for devices that need to be aimed.

I had the same setup as yours. Because my MOE handguards were never quite tight enough I opted for a Troy quadrail as a replacement. Much better platform but a bit pricey if the MOE suits you. Mine was just not a good fit and the heatguard kept seperating from the polymer.

Yeah, I'm looking at doing a troy drop in battlerail now once the finances allow.

I'm still confused about the sights though, you are saying that we DON'T need to use the gas block version even though it IS going on the gas block?

There are two standard height front sights, "gas block height" which is lower (and req taller sights), and "rail height".

Your OR gas block (I had one, still have the gun, replaced the GB) is rail height. So you need a "rail height" front sight. The nice thing about those is, if you switch to a quad rail, you can use the same sight. Also, rail height FS seem to be much more common these days.

This Midwest Industries page shows a FS available in both heights:
Midwest Industries: Flip Up Front Sight
Here, you would want the FFR, NOT the FFG.

That's what I'm saying. Your OR version is set up to use regular, rail type sights NOT the taller sights labelled for gas blocks. Most gas blocks that are used are "compact style" and require a taller sight base. NOT SO with the OR. Also, avoid polymer sights as the gas block gets hot and some of those won't stand up. Troy sights are the benchmark, IMHO.

Yes, I was confused too and bought the gas block version
from YHM. Had to replace it with handguard height
YHM-9627 and it works fine with the YHM rear sight.
