Default Best economic optic for M&P Sport?

Hey guys, I am just about to buy two Sports, one for the wife and one for myself. I am researching optics and there are so many optics out there I was wondering what are some of the ones you all are using sucessfully? This is my first AR and we are mostly just shooting for fun at the range etc. but these are also for SD use so they have to be reliable. I am thinking somewhere around 100$ each. Thanks and God bless. -Frank

TrueGlo makes a good inexpensive Red Dot, but it depends on what kind of optics you want, do you want open holographic, red dot, illuminated scope, non illuminated scope, the finer the reticle the more accurate the optics can be, Reticles or Red dots are described in the Term MOA, I have heard the term MOA referenced as: MOA (Minute of Angle or Minute of Arc) - a unit of angular measurement used in the firearms industry on scopes / firearms to define shooting accuracy. It is popular because 1 MOA almost equals one inch (1.0472 inches to be more precise) @ 100 yards.) A lot of inexpensive red dot optics have a 5 MOA dot and at 100yrds it will cover up the bullseye, IMHO a non illuminated scope gives me the finest point with which to aim. I just took a holographic sight off of my Sport that had a 2 MOA, but I took it off after the realization that although at 100 yards all of my bullets would hit and possible kill a bad guy (Minute of Bad Guy or MOBG ). I purchased the rifle to also hunt Prairie Dogs and 1 minute of prairie dog (MOPD ) is a lot smaller than 1 MOBG. So alot of what you are asking is how fine do you want to shoot. I hope this didnt confuse you but I was wondering when I read the question how finely you wanted to aim. The sights on it are finer than a lot of Red dots and some red dots blur under illumination and make the Dot bigger. But I still like them. But it is all in what you are looking for. So Trueglo, aimpoint, sightmark, NCStar, everyone has their own personal choice and some last and some don't, there is also Burris, bushnell, Tasco take your pick. Whatever you choose you will probably see someone at the range with something different. You will get as many answers as there are stars in the sky. Just enjoy your sport. And glad you came here to join us in the fun. We all learn together. Look at them at the stores and Ebay whatever you choose you cant go wrong but all of this is IMHO and YMMV (been learning these things In My Honest Opinion and Your Mileage May Vary) LOL

Take a look at Primary Arms. They have good budget red dots and scopes. They're well made and so far the two red dot scopes I have work great. I have the M3 and M4 style, great sights for the money.

Primary Arms, Red Dot Sights, Holosights, Rifle Scopes, Sights and Accessories. More than 90 brands in stock! Trijicon, EOTECH, Magpul and More!

Vortex strike fire (red not thr red/green) is very good and at appx. $150, includes an AR height mount.

Primary Arms also has a couple of good house brand red dots that get good reviews on the AR boards,

Wow great reply! I'm not really sure about the type, the only thing I really have any experience with besides open/iron sights are non illuminated scopes. I have a Colt .357 magnum revolver with a Leupold scope on it that is fun. I have a Mosin Nagant that is not all that much fun at 100+ yards with open sights. I think something that makes the 100 yd range more fun would be cool. The reticle and open red dots look interesting and there are several that are under 100$. I would also like to have the ability to use the iron sights when necessary. Am I asking too much?

Leapers 3-9x40 scope on Leapers carry handle. It has a Front AO, it's a Mildot reticle, Illumination green and red, flip up lens caps, and a screw on sun shade. 65.00 for the scope. 50.00 for carry handle with rail. I like it, may not be for everyone. I have bad eyesight and shoot at paper targets mostly, I like to see were the bullets hit. There is no way I can see the bullet holes when shooting from the iron sights. I can go from iron sights to 9xmag scope, and back with out missing a beat. But again I know it's not for everyone.

Not at all, My open holographic sight does what is called cowitness with my iron sights, that is where they line up with the sights and you can use it with the iron sights and actually becomes more accurate, or you can leave the holo turned off and use the iron sights looking through the glass of the sight. My sight absolute co-witnessed with my iron sights which means that the sights and the optic all line up with the sights being right in the center of the holographic reticle, there is also a 1/3 co witness and I have read about it but I have no experience with it but someone else might. I liked the absolute cause everything lined up in the center, I could use my rear sight with the holo or I could fold it down. It worked very well both ways. As you stated earlier you wanted to spend under $100 for each optic system and I quickly looked on Ebay and you should be able to do it for well under $100. I saw some nice ones just scanning through quickly for the $45 to $70 range.

This is how my Sport looks with its Open Holographic Sight on it just so you know... Also if you decide to go with a regular scope, try to get one with a little longer eye relief and for some reason I have yet to figure out, your front sight wont show up in the scope!!!truly weird

That is an Ultradot Pan-A-V...it is a little more money than you are talking about but there have been some very emotional discussions about the fact that sightmark and NCstar and a couple of other brands that are just like it only priced about 75% cheaper.

This is what I have changed to, although I did order a 1" riser that should be here Tuesday, just to get my cheek weld more to my liking. It is a Tasco 3x9/50 non illuminated hunting scope that I had left over from a deer rifle I turned into a long range competition Milsurp Target Rifle

I have a Bushnell Trophy series on my 15-22. $152

Because a stock 15-22 doesn't have a fixed front sight, I could mount it without having to use any risers. On a 15-Sport you'll need a riser.

Sight picture is real nice. I can select red or green, and select intensity.

Another nice feature is that a 3-dot traditional sight is on the top of the scope for back-up.

If you require a bigger dot to stand out, I suggest a Primary Arms M3 clone. $69

The nice thing about the Primary Arms M3 is that you can add a separate 3X magnifier on a quick disconnect or flip to side mount. You'll have most ranges covered with this set up.

Here is another open site in the $100 area.

Mueller Quick Shot

Seems to have pretty good reviews, even though it is inexpensive.

This is very similar to the Ultradot...although the ultradot only has 7 levels of brightness and a lifetime warranty still there are quite a few out there that dont cost an arm and a leg like mine did.

I got one of these to put on my Sport......whenever it gets here.

EOTech 512 Tactical Model, AA Batteries, Black - Impact Guns

So far, I've got the ammo, got the red dot, all I need is a friggin' gun to put it on! Put my order in two weeks ago, seems like every dealer has the Sport on backorder.

I have a Lucid HD 7 on my M+P AR and I think it hard to beat. I also have a Bushnell TRS-25 on my JR .40 cal carbine and that may be your best choice. The Bushnell is light and has great reviews and costs less than $100. Mine is from Optic Planet.

I have a regular Scope and also recently purchased a clone Eotech scope that I'm going to try out as well. I'd love the real thing but they are just waaayyyyy to expensive.

Using a new Tru-Glo optic
Log On | TRUGLO, Inc.TRU-BRITE OPEN RED-DOT SIGHT

It cost me $100. Its cheap, accurate, and durable. If your like me and can't afford $1000 on an optic.

Thanks guys. I am looking at the Vortex and the PA micro at the moment and leaning towards the Vortex. However I may just grab both and use one on my revolver. The Leupold is just too dang big and heavy on that one.

I have an NcStar Mark III illuminated scope on mine and its pretty nice for the cost. In the future I would like to get a red dot just because in a self defense situation its easier to get on target than trying to hurry up to look through a scope especially at close distances.

I have read all the previous posts and still can't put a clear answer together. I have pretty much the same question so don't want to start a new thread. I want a cheap holographic that will co-witness with the front A2 sight. I tried the 2 cheap ones that Academy carries and they were not tall enough. Thanks for any help.

https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary_...0red%20dot.htm

This is what I affixed to my 15-Sport.

The Primary Arms M3 Clone with a high cantilever mount. The 3MOA dot is OK.

You should also check out the Primary Arms micro dot on a QD mount.
