Could you move the sight ramp forward?

I am purchasing a M&P15 SPORT model so all questions are based on that specific model. I was thinking about buying an after market gas stop and installing, then I would like to move the sight ramp forward towards the end of the barrel for a better sight radius. I was wondering if that is at all possible.

A second question I have is :does the sight ramp affect the visibility through a scope that would be mounted on the flat top rail? Or would I have to raise the scope about the front sight ramp?

Due to the gas port, the front sight ramp has to stay where it is. You can replace the gas block and get a longer handguard to move a sight out further or you can replace the barrel with a longer rifle length barrel and get your sight out further. As long as your barrel diameter stays the same I cant see why you couldnt move it but making sure it stays true would be the hard part. In my experience with the front sight ramp where it is at I get pretty accurate groupings anyway. I have a 4-16x40 scope on mine. I did have it on the receiver rail but it was hard to get to the charging handle and difficult to get a good sight picture. I have since put a 3/4" high quick detach scope rail on and using the taller scope rings I get a great sight picture. Due to the fact that the focal plane on the scope is down range you dont see the front sight. When I was mounted on the receiver rail I saw a little shadow but now I dont even see that.

yeah I def would have another gas port in place of it, and I was thinking about having a gunsmith re install it farther down on the barrel so it would remain true and square.

What brand is your quick connect/mount raisert? Also after removal and installation how does that affect the zero of the scope?

I bought an NCStar (inexpensive like $30) Yesterday was my first time shooting it and I did take it off and on. I was very happy with the zero it held, side to side may have changed ever so slightly but sometimes I slap the trigger so it is hard to tell. I really like it and like the ability to pull it off and go with the irons!

The scope will not register the sight ramp so long as it is in the lower 1/3-1/4 of the sight picture. It's just a bit of a dark spot well under the reticle.

The Burris PEPR is pretty nice, and I also have an NCStar QD mount that is pretty surprisingly good.
As oneyeopen stated, the easiest way to achieve what you desire is to cut off the upper half of the A post, and then get a freefloat handguard that will reach over the gas block. This, or get a front sight post that is a clamp on, and set it where you want to have it. Check online, I think ARMS makes one that is just a sight, and not a gas block. There are other front sight posts that are more AK style that do not integrate the gas block.
You don't move the gas block; you get a different barrel if that is the final way to go. You would get either a mid length or a rifle length gas system, and then put the gas block further forward.

Yep! And, I have seen them or similar for a bit less. But that one would do the trick perfectly.

To mount something like that, or a scope: Put the rifle in a vise, lightly....

Using a small level, go across the rail and get it level side to side. Mount the scope, and then put the same small level on the top turret of the scope. Carefully tighten the screws down with an alternating pattern. For the front post, it's not going to work exactly the same, but if the rifle is straight in a clamp or vise, you can get it good.
