Default Longer Distance Shooters

I look around the forum and see some amazingly cool tactical rifles. Rifles that in an urban environment would be very good for self defense against the Zombie Army. Flashlights and lasers and really nice lower power optics. You guys know what you want and are turning out rifles that are equal to anything you can buy.

My question of the day is...How many are like myself, turning your AR into something that will reach out and touch something. A rifle that is set up to regularly shoot to at least 300 yards which is the limit that I put on mine just because after that distance it looses a lot in the punch. But would shoot paper to 500. Please comment and show pics of your LD AR's.

300 yards...

Well, you're a Marine. I was in the Navy (Nuke ET) and never saw a weapon, so I'm happy punching paper at 50 yards! :-)

Meet some guys testing some handloads at a forestry range . Only 100 yard but they were checking velocity between loads and group size . They both shoot regularly at 500 yards with match's to 600 yards with 1-7 twist barrel and up to 80gr bullets. They were say'n that today many .223 shooters are out classing the 308's with heavier .223 loads. Seems to be right after doing a bit of reading at accurateshooters forum too.

I bought my MP-15 with the intent of short and midrange shooting, prolly won't be doing anything much over 100 yds. For that reason I chose to go with a holographic red dot (Eotech 512) coupled with a 6X magnifier, and didn't consider equipping it with a conventional scope.

I'll leave the long range, hunting type of shooting for my .308 bolt coupled with her friend Leupold.

I have a couple of Custom Mausers in 8x57 that are very fine long distance shooters, a little bit of overkill on varmints but do the job just fine. Like you when I bought my sport it was to have a fun short to mid range gun to put targets up and compete with the buds and nephews or to go pdog hunting with. In fact when I ordered it I ordered a really nice holographic sight with it. I installed the sight, absolute cowitnessed with my irons and went shooting. It was absolute fun but it seemed like the gun could do more. As I have since found out it does so much more and it is thrilling to put that shot downrange on a small target and hit it. I have hunted pdogs for years first with a 22 and then with a 17hmr. The 17 let me reach out a little further. but nothing like what my sport lets me do. I just wanted to see if anyone else was having fun with this side of the sport.

Guilty as charged!!
I picked up my M & P 15-22 today and decided to switch the carry handle and NCstar scope (3 x 9 x42) to it and buy a new carry handle and put a new NCstar scope ( 3 x 12 x 50E) I just bought today on it. I had to order the new handle from amazon so it will be next week when I can post the new pics of my babies 8 ).

Yeah I am going to replace the gas block on mine and try that "free" 8-32x42 scope out..it has full mildot reticles so I can hold over or under or sideways for windage...plus I hope to really shoot tight groups. My dies will be here monday and tuesday I go to the reloading store...I should be set. going to buy bullets in the mid to high 60's to try first.

Ok I installed the 8-32x42 Scope and boresighted it just as far as I could see the laser after dark, about a block. She tuned in real nice and yeah the FOV is a little smaller than I am used to but I think I will be able to adjust, now install my gas block and folding front sight and new Charging Handle latch and see how it turns out.

She is cowitnessed with the front Iron sight LOL!!!

Without that 3/4 inch NcStar QD riser mount, Scopes become too long very quickly.

Here's an older one I put together about 15 years ago, it has a 20 inch fluted heavy barrel and a Timney 3lb trigger.
Once I worked up loads for it I had no problem taking P dogs out to 300, and yotes out to 500.

Here's my latest SPR, just assembled after painting (DuraCoat) I expect great things out of this one using lessons learned over the years.

GMC Man..(my wife drives a GMC) anyway very very nice, I get my box of presents tomorrow, I was given a gift of some nice upgrade parts. I have been given some gifts of some parts and I want to thank everyone. The VA doesnt pay well and I have a lot of friends, I do what I can to help them and have been given some nice things, I do want to thank you all. Any way the head of FAA Corp (www.faacorp.net) decided I needed some lighter weight products on my heavy Sport so he is sending me a package with one of everything on their list to try out. I posted a video under my thread "charging handle and bipod mount" of some of his products. So I will install tomorrow and go resight back in with my replaced gas block and reconfigured rifle and then take some pics. I hope it looks as nice as yours does. Good Job!! Now go knock something down at 400 meters!!

P.S. Crracer has already said someone is gonna tell my I have a bullet sticking out the side of my rifle!!

Hey oneeyeopen, I'm working on some loads using 75+ grs., single shot using a sled in the magazine for distance but haven't got them ready yet.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with and I'll post my results also. I'm breaking out the chrono this week-end to start testing.

We havent set up our range any further than 200 so far, but It will go back a lot further, Might end up in my great uncles back yard but I think we can go back to close to 700 before the ground drops off and then you cant see the target....I just got my new Brownell's AR15 catalog today...talk about a wish list.... I found a melonite by a different name (QPQ) treated bolt carrier, only $199. Probably not gonna happen this year or next but I am just checking it all out.
Please let me know how you do....The rifle is way more accurate than I am..

One suggestion I have is mount the scope directly to the upper rather than on the carry handle.
The ideal set up is to have the scope as close to the bore as possible, otherwise paralax will cause problems.

I have found that mounting further away from the barrel bore does create some problems in itself. You dont have to worry about the front sight, because your focal plane is so much further out you dont see it in your scope so you can drop it down to the top of the receiver. And then when your ready you can change out your gas block for not a lot of money.

I have seen the word "paralax" before and do not understand exactly what it is. Could you explain it for me ?

An apparent change in the position of an object, caused by a change in position of the line of sight. I am trying to define it and make it understandable, but if your scope is very far off of your bore it is possible to see two images of the object you are sighting in on. I find parallax problems to be more apparent when I am bore-sighting but a lot of scopes will allow you to adjust the ocular (closest lens) to accommodate for some of it. As I understand it Heavy Artillery and Tanks have the adjustment built into them but rifle scopes are intended to be mounted as close as possible to the line of the bore, so unless you buy specific parallax free scopes you may have to adjust for it, but so far I haven't had a problem that I could not adjust for.

You would have to ask that!
Sorta hard to explain without 10 pictures a course in geometry, and a video.
Anyway here we go...
Paralax also refers to the angle difference between your line of sight through a scope and the line running throught the center of the bore.
Both those lines intersect at the point your rifle is sighted in at.
The farther from your bore that you mount a scope, the greater the angle.
The greater the angle, the more difference there will be in impact points of your bullet at ranges other than the one you're sighted in at.
Think of a long "X" turned on it's side, the less angle between the Two intersecting lines, the less deviation there will be on a vertical plane intersecting those Two lines at any distance.

That's about as good as I can explain it, hope it helps.

I took the risers out from under my scope and mounted it on the receiver rail today. boresighted it and took it out to shoot. I could not get my eyes to align with the scope to save my life so the risers are going back on it.
