Default Welcome to the forum!

I am curious as to why you're interested in a g/p? I've read views favoring both the direct impingment and gas piston systems.

Hope you get a speedy response.

I just don't like doing a detailed cleaning after every time I shoot.... I would much rather do a quick wipe down....

I'm just curious what system will clear the 10" rails

How many rounds and what ammo are you shooting per session?

the link above is the system that I am looking at, also for extra money you can get it nickel/boron plated for even less maintenance through a company called Zero Fail

Really there is no reason for Army "white glove" clean except in officers' minds who live for inspections. I wouldn't put a piston on a DI gun that's working well and I wouldn't worry about a little grunge. Have you ever seen the reports on the BCM midlength AR nicknamed "Filthy 14"? Run it dirty and just keep adding lube. Overcleaning causes more wear and tear than normal shooting.

Check out the piston ar subsection over at AR15.com, you should get most of your questions answered there.

This.

I run my AR15's wet and I run them pretty hard. I don't run any corrosive ammunition, just US military surplus ammo or bulk Federal 55gr .223. Aside from a quick swab through the barrel before they go back in the safe I don't bother cleaning them until I've run at least 500 rounds through each one, usually more than 500rds before I clean. Why? Why not? My carbine (a less than entirely stock M&P15T manufactured about 1 year after S&W moved full production in-house) has more than 5,000 rounds through it to date without a single malfunction of any kind. My precision AR15 build had 2 malfunction within the first 50 rounds (since chalked up to break-in) and has run flawlessly for the 2,000 or so rounds I've since put through it.

There's a lot of erroneous information floating around about AR's from internet forums, local gun range 'experts', and from sales folks in a great many gun stores throughout the US. The AR15 was designed to operate using direct gas impingement and it does so very reliably when run as it was designed to. Retro-fitting a piston system into an AR won't guarantee anything more than extra weight out front.

Your mileage may vary of course.

Oddly enough I've emailed S&W twice on the matter at different times and no response. Can't even get the specs on the rail from them in general.

i actually called them and got no answer....somehow they dont know. looking at it i know there is going to be some trimming of the rail and possibly some cut outs. at this point i dont think its worth the effort. i want an sbr so i will just buy a piston sbr upper
