dead weight
There's hundreds of different accessories for an AR15 out there. My question is, "what accessories have you seen that strikes you as gimmicky or dead weight? "
To each his own, so please don't go stripping pieces off your rifle or get overly defensive after reading someone's opinion.

IMO, if an accessory works for the individual shooter it isn't dead weight.
For example, a free float quad rail is dead weight to me because i don't prefer them.
A red dot is 1/2 dead weight to me because I prefer to shoot irons, but I also recognize the capabilities a red dot offers.

I think it's a great question; although there is no right answer. If I had to say one thing its the B.A.D. lever. I can't believe people buy these. It's hard for me to imagine any justification for one. OTOH, if it trips your trigger, good for you. And it doesn't add much weight.
I like my rifle to be fairly light: a detachable scope, detachable flashlight (most often detached), a sling and iron sights and an upgraded trigger.

I have found after you have shot your rifle for a while, each person figures out what is dead weight and it disappears. I dont have any dead weight on my rifle right now. And after I figured out what I wanted to do with it never added any.

I suspect there are one or two things here some might consider superfluous.

It all depends on the shooter and the application. Personally I'm more of a minimalist when it comes to gun mounted accessories. If it don't have a specific need or purpose it's not on there. As I get older I find that with aging eyes that optics are an ever increasing requirement with irons as a back up. I don't really believe in gun mounted lights, because it's a great big beacon that screams "Here I am", but I digress and say to each their own.

Just did a 3-gun this past weekend, and I noticed just what this thread is about. The AR's had adjustable stocks, simple tube front hand guards, and a red dot or low power scope. All rifle shots were between 5 and 350 yards.
Simple is best when the rifle gets dropped in a barrel at one point in a course of fire, and has to be 100% in the next course.

I don't have any rails on my handguard so that keeps the addition of dead weight to my Sport to a minimum. haha

For the sake of discussion,
Lights do have off and on options. Also I would add identifying your target as a friend or foe is just as important as target acquisition.

My mp15 22 had so many different acceseries. It had a flash light, laser, scope, bipod, and a red dot. Now my 223 has magpul furniture and iron sights. I do not need anything else.

Agreed. I have a drawer with rail covers that were too bulky, a light that was a piece of junk, a bipod, a VFG bipod, AFG and a fake supressor... It all seemed like a good idea at the time! Now I realize that a clean rifle is more my style so I've been investing in ammo and mags almost exclusively.

A little lighthearted musings has been great today. the thing about these 15's and QD mounts is the ability to change it at a moments notice to make it fit the situation that you are going into. Also after dark I have a great big bright flashlight and 45acp...target ID and acquisition all in two hands...LMAO

That's what the hand mounted surefire with the push button end cap is for. Perhaps a forward handle mounted pressure switch for cqb with something longer than a pistol.

IMO, DI or Piston...as long as it slings lead downrange, it's all good.

Reminds me of the Chrysler cars of the 60's...with headlights scattered all over the front end. Some of those should be in the UFO class.
