my new mp 15 sport with upgrades
This is my pretty new mp 15 sport with some upgrades. I added a bunch of magpul furniture, a preban 30 round mag because I live in ny, and lastly just got a 3 point black hawk sling today. I plan on getting a magpul moe fde stock and lastly a new bolt carrier, barrel and fde charging handle. Overall I am very happy with this gun. It is my first ar15 in 223.

Lookin' good. Now go shoot that thing!
What's the story with the "pre-ban" mags in NY? If it was manufactured before the ban, you're good to go?

Yup However, it can still be a tricky thing though. If you call too much attention to yourself an LEO can take them for analysis. Some are dated on the inside and others aren't. But from what I hear there are certain brands that you want to look for which are more readily accepted as "pre-ban" but yes, if the mags were made before the ban date then you can legally use them. The devil is in the details of proving they are "pre-ban"
OP: what kind did you get (should say on the base plate)? I recently bought a couple DSL Sanchez's. They seem to have an undeserved bad rep, but they are really not a bad USGI pre-ban. I had the black followers which tilt something fierce. So all I did was swap them out for the Magpul four way non tilt followers and they are great!
Its funny how something so minor, and considered standard or normal in most of the country can be such a thrill to have here in NY...

Haha.. I hear you I dont know what brand it is .. it doesnt say. I knoww I want a pmag! Sometimes I dont understand how stores are still selling a ton of prebans. I see them ALL over the place. Ive have seen them at every gun store I have been too and every range. I feel like distributors are just making them and replicating them to look like the ones before the 94 ban. Unless the companys just made a **** ton before the ban because they knew it was coming? Because they are so easy to get around me I dont see the big deal of just getting a pmagg lol.

i live in mass. and i feel your pain....when i first got my mp15 it came with a 10 rd. mag wich looks dumb on the gun. if i want a ''cooler looking'' 30 rd. mag it has to be a pre-ban mag wich is 20 yrs. old and in my neck of the woods kind of hard to find. if my LGS has any they routinely sell for $35-40 .....highway robbery! here is a tip : check out a gun show in your state, i did and went home with 4 THERMOLD 30 rd. magz for a total of $50 and 4 pmag 30 rd. magz with the ''window'' for $72 .....none were pre ban and were brand new....how my duin

ahhh...there are no preban pmags...Magpul came after '94. Thermold's are pretty much the only preban poly mags. Just a little word of warning...

And it is a warning to think about, the LEO's will probably know this also.

They have to be made before 1994. Some are stamped, some are not, some have codes. However it is up to the DA to prove that you were fully aware that the mag was made after 94 to successfully charge you. I use some old colt mags and thermold mags and I keep the sales receipt that states they are preban in the handle of my AR.

Yes, my preban 30 round wsas 40 dollars.. originally 45 but I got hooked up.. Gun shows give cheaper prices, however, pmags are definitely not preban.

It is funny that your not allowed to own them but they can sell them, that sounds like entrapment to me.

Entrapment is only used by police. Police arent selling the mags. Businesses are. They will get more ****ed than the buyer.

if you think about how many military mags were made pre-ban and probably disappeared from the military that would explain a lot of them...so when you are ready to get rid of that barrel send me a message, I might be willing to take it off your hands, if not I am going to buy one from AR Performance who makes barrels to the sport standard only they make them in Middies and Rifle length also

why do you like the sports barrel so much? I always thought a chrome line barrel was the way to go?

after all the studying I did the properties of the Melonite treatment are phenomenal, actually as a civilian I dont think I will ever wear out a melonite treated barrel. If you get the chance under the sticky threads there is a thread about the melonite treatment and read the engineering data on Melonite. Plus the barrel is made and then treated, unlike a chrome barrel which is made and then chrome plated and then reamed to size but there is no way for the chrome lining to be uniform through the barrel. Where the melonite treatment is uniform throughout the barrel inside and out.

Not to forget the 5R rifling with a 1/8 progressive twist. The sport barrel is it's greatest feature IMHO.
