I was discussing the S&W M&P 15 Sport with a gun dealer at a gun show over the weekend. He stated the M&P Sport had a cast receiver whereas the regular M&P 15 had a forged receiver. I had never heard this. Does anyone have any information about the receivers of the above rifles? Is this dealer correct?

According to our friends over at AR15.com..you will not find a cast upper, and the companies that made cast lowers no longer do. If you find an upper of lower with raised lettering there is a possibility of it being cast but if you look inside the upper receiver and it is rough and granular it will be cast. But even they say that no one is making cast receivers except for the poly ones. I would say that the dealer is very incorrect. I just spent 45 minutes looking it up.

I have yet to see the S&W upper...all the M&P's I've handled are Anchor Harvey or Cero Forged

Were those from when Stag Arms produced the M&P line for S&W? I watched a show just a few weeks ago on the Outdoor Channel (I think), and they were giving a tour of the S&W manufacturing plant. On that show, they stated that all of their receivers for the M&P line were now forged in house.

where on the upper can you find where it was forged... im curious :D

Punisher the marks are found @ the back of the upper usually on the ejection port side

My youngish sport came with an Anchor Harvey upper ( perhaps S&W did the machining and forged the lowers only at that point of production?) My FN upper receiver is Brass Aluminum Forging Enterprises according to this chart.....

Is it on the inside or the outside. I am finding no marks on my Sport.

Interesting...my upper has an A on it.

Oneyeopn, the mark is on the upper about an 3/4" behind the brass deflector.

I dont have a forging mark on mine but my lowers serial number is in the low 6000's...and I still think they intended the Sports to have all their serial numbers start with SP but got behind and had to start using other parts to build what they could

So after I watched the vid, another vid came up that said S&W AR15 Fail.
It had a failure to feed and then the bolt got stuck, It is a M&P lower with a BCM upper, Morons dont even have a clue! the more of it I watch the more I realize that there are even more idiots out there

I have a lower with a serial number of #868** on it bought about 2 1/2 months ago . My receiver also has a A over H for archor harvey on it. I was told from a S&W m&p engineer just before buying mine not a qc guy that the rifle has all machine work in house . Buy the upper forgeings and machine in house. I was not sharp enough to ask about the lower at that time. That is more practical and offers control that many don't have or use. Look on the right rear side of your recievers and see whats on yours.

Now I did just put a call in to S&W to ask some more questions and now just waiting see if I get a call back from a M&P person not a qc guy. Also mention it might be better if someone from S&W would scan this forum and clear some things up once in a while.

The SP in your Lower serial number indicates it was made in Singapore. Sorry for the misinformation early that indicated the Sport parts came form China....
