I have been loving my M&P 15 for about a year now. I have it set up as mainly a long distance (100-300yrd) rifle with a scope and bipod. In the near future I would like to get another M&P 15 and use that gun for a more tactical CQB platform.

So my question is, what is involved in changing the barrel from the factory 16" (?) to say a 11.5"? Is it as simple as just swapping out barrels? or is it going to require some major modding of the gas tubes or gas systems..Sry, really new to AR's in general and my terminology may be wrong.

What I really wanted was this exact model, just with a 11.5" barrel :

If you are in the USA, it will take jumping through all the legal hoops to legally own a short barreled rifle. Make sure you really want to mess with the expense and hassle first.

Didnt realize there was a legal issue with this. Hmm. What made me want this was I was at the range last weekend and one of the RO's was next to me with his AR and he had the 11.5" barrel on his gun. I was really impressed by it and quickly realized I wanted one. Any idea the expense for the paperwork/permit? Or whatever?

EDIT:

After some quick reading about SBR laws, I will ask a MOD to delete this thread. This wish of mine will be a waste of time for me currently. Maybe in the future, but not now.

Please close this thread. ty

No reason to close your thread...your question may help others that were wondering the same thing. Someone that has recently went through the process may come in and give you some valuable info. I believe the tax stamp is $200, but I may be wrong.

You don't need another rifle for CQB, IMO. With the right optic, your existing rifle will do just fine in both roles....unless you really intend to clear office buildings, full time, for a living.:D

I've used my M&P 15OR in several 4 day carbine courses configured as shown below. The skills test runs a course of fire from close contact out to 200 yds. I've shot mine out to 400 yds with good results. The Grip Pod provides for a good bi-pod for longer range work.

I asked the gun shop here in NC about a short rifle and was told I had to have a pistol permit for any barrels shorter then 14 inches.

You really need to find a gun shop that won't end up providing you with a felony conviction! (or read up on the BATFE rules regarding short barreled rifles...then find another gun shop)

dang that would have been bad thanks for the info guys.

the way I look at class 3 is plan on spending about $800-$1000 minimum just in parts. Then sit around and plan on waiting 6+ months to play with new toys.
