this is the third time I have tried to post this. there are some versions of the S&W M&P15 that do not have dust covers, in fact they have no provisions for a dust cover. They are called S&W M&P15 Sports. One of the reason they are an affordable rifle is that they left off some of the normal things that were put on as bandaids.
I happen to own one. In the last 6 months it as made more transformations than you would imagine while I searched for its roll in my world. To make a long story short, the rifle did more than I can ever expect...If you are headed with that particular rifle, to the sandbox, I might be a little concerned but I am not sure, knowing good soldiers I am not sure but the rifle wouldnt be wiped out and functioning fine

Thats why I said that some models, because I didnt know what model he was talking about but was making sure that his rifle had provisions for a dust cover.

If it is not a 'Sprot', Black Rain makes a pretty neat dust cover. I think it is Brownell's that has a selection of them as well. Some dust covers only come with the cover, not with the spring, retainging C ring and the the rod that goes in the upper to hold it all in place.

Actually a while back, someone was considering a plastic "plug type" dust cover for his Sport and made a prototype.
A couple of people expressed interest but I don't remember th outcome.

I saw something similar on the .22lr forum for the .22 S&W where the rod and spring were held on with adhesive.

Max2u2...I have not had any problem with dirt into my sport, it has been an exceptional rifle. Other than duct tape (which will work) and the Plug that was mentioned there are no provisions for a dust cover for the sport. There are reviews and other postings that will show you that the dust cover is really not a necessity unless you are crawling through the sand and mud and gunk and then not necessarily so.
