OR Owners
I'm sure this has been asked, but, I'm more a less confused by online dealers spec's of the OR's. I'm wondering whether it is 556 NATO or just 223 for the OR. Most seem to just say 223 whereas S&W says 556 NATO / 223.
I'd really like a Sport for the obvious cheaper price tag but it seems like they're out of stock and staying that way... And I'd honestly like a new toy now not 6 months down the road, lol.
I'd just like personal goods and bads anyone has to offer about the OR. I have all the bells and whistles decided upon I'm still just trying to make a solid decision on the rifle itself, I'm also looking at Bushmaster's and so on..
Thanks for any replies

I have no idea. My rule of thumb is to refer to the markings on the barrel.
If you're looking on the net, go by the specs provided by the S&W Mothership. Just make sure to match S&W product number to whatever online dealer's website info to be 100% sure of a match.

It's a 556 barrel. So it's safe to shoot both. I love my OR

Yep. 5.56 and I shoot both types of ammo. There are nothing but goods from me. No bads at all and you might have trouble finding anyone with issues with their M&Ps. Not saying they are perfect but Smith did a great job with this line.

Just to chime in with more confirmation, it's definitely a 5.56mm barrel. I like it a lot.
My only negative was that when I went to change out my gas block and foreend, I had to cut the original barrel nut and gasblock off, because they were loctited on so thoroughly. With one of the good armorer's wrenches (the ones that engage every tooth halfway around the barrel nut) I was breaking teeth off the nut rather than getting it to move, even after heating it with a torch.
That problem seems hit-and-miss with ORs - some people are able to get the block and nut off easily, some have no end of trouble with it. If you're not planning to change out the gasblock or put a free float handguard on it, you'll never have to worry about it.

im not even sure my gun is fully a S&W... i just call it an OR because its a flat top with a picatinny gas block lol... no caliber markings ANYWHERE on this gun... i took it to a very good local gunsmith to have him take measurements of the chamber to verify it was actually a 5.56... but its all good its smooth as butta and fun as hell... the side of the lower says smith and wesson and thats what i say it is

I for one, didn't really want to know Steve's name. It's not as intimidating as this 'PunisherBane' name.
j/k Stevie!

I own the OR and so far it has worked well for me. I too was after a Sport. The LGS got the OR in before the Sport, I snapped it up! I got it mid May and have a little over 1200 rounds thru it. The only mechanical things I've done to it is a H2 buffer and a heavy duty ejector spring/oring kit. No FTF, no FTE, nothing! IMHO, if your not going to get a S&W then get a Colt. Prices are good right now for most brands. I picked the OR over the Colt! BTW, my barrel is marked "5.56 NATO".

Not totally correct....you can easily install a quality free floating handguard, such as Daniel Defense Omega 7.0, without removing anything except the factory handguard. It is a solid install and easily stands up to the rigors imposed by a Grip-Pod attached to the handguard. Been there, done that.
Here is pic of mine and the Omega 7.0 install write-up.

To avoid making a new thread.. Does anyone have a Troy Battlerail? Specifically this 9" one. I've been trying to get all my upgrades together for this bad boy but figure this rail may be an issue due to the gas blocks rail..

I'm with you one this one!
I bought a pre-owned but never fired OR yesterday, and there are no caliber markings to be found!
At least I'm in the M&P15 owners club now!

I don't see how it will work with the OR gas block.
My YHM rail is 7.25", and butts right up to the gas block.

Yeah. I took it out of the case it had been sitting in since I got it and realized that it was tapped out of space lol. Hopefully no one comes in and tells me a way to get a 9" one on it. I'm gonna save a few bucks just using the 7" one.

Here is the Troy 7" version on my OR although it now resides on my EA-15. A Daniel Defense free-floating rail has replaced it. Both are quality products, in my opinion.

The YHM Diamond Rail fills in the gaps to make the top rail continuous.
I really like it.

The Troy shown above is a "drop in"' not the MRF-C which IS free float, eliminates the D ring and can be installed without removing the gas block.
