Choosing between PSP and FMJ / 55gr vs 62 gr
Hey fellas (and ladies?)..
I'm interested in your opinions on PSP vs FMJ and 55grain vs 62 grain.
For the M&P AR15, does it like either better?
What is YOUR particular reason(s) for going with one or the other?
55 grain us often a bit less so I would think price for plinking and targeting would often be the primary reason for 55 grain? 62 grain the more serious take down round due to the increased mass?
thx

55 fmj was the original military bullet weight. 62 was the next military bullet in an effort to extend range. This is the main reason you see so many of these. For paper punching and ringing steel either is OK(except the 62 with steel insert, they damage steel targets). For short range accuracy I prefer a 52 or 53, these are generally more accurate since they are designed for target or match shooting. For longer range target work, I prefer 68 or 69 depending on brand. For really long range, a 75, 77 or 80 is needed. Now If you are shooting small live stuff, 50 or 55 plastic tipped or SP or HP(designed for expanding) is good. For larger live stuff you need a 55 - 65 game bullet for propper performance.

I totally agree with Frank, one thing I would like to add is the the PSP generally have a lower BC which up close doesnt matter but when you start carrying some distance I find them to be less accurate. Oh Frank by the way I picked up a bunch of those blems we talked about...

Does the S&W M&P Sport have any trouble with the PSP rounds?
And does the rifling prefer 62 grain (as I've read somewhere).
Note...after calling Smith & Wesson a moment ago and asking these questions the response was......
The M&P was designed for heavier bullets. 62 grain is preferable over 55 grain.
FMJ is preferable over PSP.

I reload like a lot of other guys on this forum, and I have yet to find a bullet (50-80gr) the sport doesn't shoot and shoot well. I hunt and only use soft point or ballistic tip bullets and have never had a problem with either.

I'm a hand loader... here's what I've found with my Sport, as well as my "other" AR...
The M193s (55gr.) give me reasonable accuracy with an occasional flyer a couple inches away. The M855s (62gr.) give me more consistent accuracy than the M193s. By far the most accurate out of my Sport are my handloads, the best of which I have found to be a Sierra 60gr. hollow point, flat base bullet. I have not shot anything any heavier.

I have the Sport and mine actually likes the Federal M193 55grn FMJ and PMC 223 55 grn FMj better than the 62grn FMJ. There's not a big difference but at 100 yards the two 55 grn are more accurate. Each gun seems to pick it's own favorite loads. Yours may like some other ammo better.
Here's my last target at 100 yards with Fed M193. The 62 grn pattern would be about 15 - 20% larger spread. These were all 3 shot groups. The red bullseye is 1.5 in across.
